Well done for daring to publish the article today. Though never having been a big fan of Mr Jack Straw, I must applaud him for his comments that represent the vast majority of his constituents. The backlash from this will be huge. I, as many others feel personal insulted when I see a Muslim women veiled in the way that they are. It is in insult to MY way of life, MY country, MY traditions, MY religion and most of all to members of MY family who died to keep this country free from, fanatical, ill-informed, indoctrinated, misguided and brain-washed individuals, who also happened to dress in black.
If I decided to become a devout Christian and decided to walk around Blackburn in a peaked hat with 2 slits for eyes, as they do in Seville, Spain during semana santa, I would be arrested, for racism.
Why are these people here? Is it for the warm inviting climate? Or the welcoming bars or the great and many varied ways we can prepare pork or maybe or scantly clad females and open mindedness of the locals. Maybe not. So why do you come to a country where everything you resent is forefront? Or maybe WE have got it all wrong. If you want to be a topless model, choose Tehran to launch your career, thinking of opening a surfing school?..... has to be the Dead Sea, watch wild wilder beast roaming the plains?.. has to be Iceland. These people chose to live here. By doing so they wanted to live our lifestyle. They have blatantly failed to do that. They have insulted it and disrespected it. In doing so they have also jeopardized the reputation and integrity of the majority of Muslims who can live within the community, practise their religion and mutually share their culture to the benefit of all. We refuse to accept the KKK way of dressing, why should we accept theirs.
If this is such a respectfull and caring religion the first thing you would do is respect the environment you live in and consider the feelings of those around you. Many will cry but we are British, we have British passports, but as the old saying goes....if a dog is born in a stable does it become a horse.?.....yes.. but only when it starts behaving like a horse. if not, well............
Loose the veil or try the USA where no veils are EVER EVER visible. Wonder why

Well said! If I were to emigrate to another country I would expect to live by that countrys rules and regulations, speak their language etc etc. What annoys me is when our children are told that they cannot send christmas cards to their friends because it might upset other children of different religions. If you want to live in Britain, then you must respect us and our way of life.

Yay! Another person who's not afraid to speak his mind!! Oops we'll get branded for being racist next. Sad really because I'm not at all. I want to stand up for MY rights and not the rights of people who think they can do how they please. I think the full veil is offensive, pretty damn scary and most of all a statement against the British culture and should be banned. As most people say, you go to a muslim country and you have to respect their cultures (quite rightly so) but what would happen if you didn't? I dread to think. It's a fact that it's not muslim law to wear the veil in this country so why has there been so much uproar about Jack Straw's comments. This is England and we are very proud of our country so adapt to our ways because then and only then will you be accepted by it's people.

I agree with Jack Straw, I also find it unsettling, not just because of the current tension between muslims and non-muslims, but because of the veil stopping the ability to identify you.

He did not call for the wearing of the veil to be banned, just stated a preference and I applaud him for having the courage to do so.

BUT... Where is this backlash you refer to? Jack Straw made his comments a while ago and it has not materialised has it? Even if it had, I suggest people read the comments of Talfryn T (above) before proclaiming Islam as being inherently evil.

Oh man! You're so right, if only people like you were in power, what a difference you could make you've said everything I wanted to say. There is however one more issue. How can you tell for sure that the person wearing the veil is a woman and not a villain in disguise, security cameras cannot tell

There is no law or regulation in the UK governing cloths or what to wear and those of you who think people should not wear veils are idiots who will be ignored. The only way forward is to change the law but that will rightfully cover hoodies as well. But even if they take off their veils, it will not stop there, people like you will want them to change their religion and names. Where next. I tell people like Straw( A Jew making pronouncements on Islam is a laugh isn't it?) and you to mind your own business.

Jack Straw has not even tried to stop Muslim women from wearing the veil, he has simply said that he preferred women not to wear the veil when visiting him. As for the veil being evil, please explain what it is that makes a simple piece of cloth evil? modest, yes. Evil definitely no. Evil comes from within a person, not their religion, their race or what they decide to wear from freedom of choice. But from your question and your beliefs, I do believe that when it comes be being evil, you yourself are a prime candidate. As for the "quote" if a dog is born in a stable does it become a horse? you say yes, unfortunately you are wrong again it is still a dog. We are what we are, and yes just for the book I am white, I am British, of which people like you, with your attitude towards fellow human beings, makes me ashamed to be British at times, and yes I am a Muslim. Live and let live and may peace and blessings be upon you.

A veil can be useful if the wearer is pug-ugly, has a facial deformity or wants to keep gum-chewing secret. Such people could be tolerated in UK, and could apply for a permit (though perhaps black veils are not easily acceptable).. It's also useful for a man to disguise himself as a woman or a religious, so to get access to banks, schools etc for nefarious purposes, or wilfully to frighten youngsters as do wicked witches.. Such people should not be tolerated in UK. I don't really mind veils, if the wearer has a reason satisfactory to her and has thought about it and considered the objections being raised around her.
Me, I don't like the so-called "hoodies", named after the garment worn by squads of teenage layabouts in UK making our streets, no-go areas after school. They don't seem to mind looking ugly, deformed and they constantly chew gum.

The issue in my mind is that a veil has no religious significance, there is absolutely nothing in the Quoran which states that a woman must/should wear one, it is purely a cultural phenomenon, as to some people a baseball cap or hoodie might be seen, yet hoodie wearers aren't allowed in shopping centres!!!

I totally agree with what you have said, if its part of their religion then why don't all muslims wear viels, I for one have seen the thieving gits round shops, filling there garments with whatever they want, and security are too bloody scared of stoping them for being branded racist, people have to stop being scared to approach them or to say anything against them, I made a complaint about a bully who was muslim, and was told I was racisit, its got to stop, before Enoch Powell is proved right, and the streets of Britain will run with blood.

I have foreign friends, from many faiths who have embraced the British way of life, they may not agree with everything, but respect mine and others rights to be British.

It comes to something when you are told to remove a St Georges flag because its stirring up racial hatred, that you cannot hld a St Georges day march, the people of Britain need to stand up for our rights, if others dont like the way we do things, go back to your own country and live the life you want to, do not make me change mine.

The do-gooders will be out to get you my friend for exercising the right to speak your true feelings towards 'women of the veil'

I, on the other hand think you are spot on.......if these people wanted liberation from their old lives why carry it onto their new lives in UK. They bleat on about how they are not treated fairly in this country, when in fact they are given SPECIAL treatment, they can build their own places of worship, cover themselves from head to toe with those veils, get money, housing, healthcare and anything else thats going for nothing!!!

We as natives are just supposed to shut up and watch this going on while they slag our country and disrespect our people!!

Go home if your country is so much better!!

My dad says they must wear veils because they are so ugly. Ha ha, just joking. What annoys me is that western women fought and some even died for us to have equal rights and respect from men. Now i live in an area in london which is heavily populated by muslims and EVERY SINGLE time i leave the house i am leered at and have disgusting comments said to me by muslim men. Many of them think all western women are sluts, just because we are free and you know, speak... I find it intimidating and downright frightening, especially after dark. Why are we going backwards after all the work of the suffragettes?
