Wilton has a national teaching class for cake decorating. There is a beginner, intermediate and advance class. Use their book for the beginner, you can't go wrong. They are available at WalMart and Michael's Arts and Crafts.

My mum used to decorate wedding cakes and she taught herself from a book from Marks & Spencer's. It's really good, nice and simple instructions. Or another place to try is women's magazines, they usually have good simple ideas that are excellent for beginners.
Hope that helps xxx
