I took a picture of us and put it in a tiny ziploc bag with a small flag and he kept it in his kevlar. He was there 16 months and still had it there when he made it back.

A picture and a lot of letters are the best things you can do for him. The letters will definitely help keep his morale up, and when he will have the picture to remember what he has waiting back home. They might not seem like much, but they will do more good for him than you could imagine while he is on deployment.

I bought my husband a Nintendo DS he keeps it in his arm pocket a lot of the time... My mom got my husband a silver acorn to keep in his wallet too.. to some cultures acorns symbolize luck...
Just as a warning... Depending on his job he might not be able to keep pictures of you or his family on him... I have friends that when they go in to an Iraqi City the only thing they have on their uniform it an American Flag because if they get captured many soldiers don't want their families and loved ones to be in danger. All that needs to be known about American soldiers is that they are an American soldier... and that is it.
So if you truly want some thing that he can carry on him at all times you might want to get something more anonymous...

A tattoo is good... just remember never to get any name tatood on unless it is a child of yours
Otherwise.. when he is over there... send the following type of care package....
Go to Sam's Club or Costco and by the mega pack of toilet paper. Where the tube rolls are, punch holes and in each one stuff a bottle of hot sauce down there.... 2 things every soldier appreciates in the field is good TP and hot sauce....
trust me... been there

My husband is over there now, getting ready to come home. I gave him a lil book of pictures of his loved ones. He keeps it in his uniform pocket right next to his pen that he uses daily. He enjoys it. All the pictures are wallet size.

If you have a ring that is sentimental to both of you give that to him.
He can wear it on his ID tags and keep it close to his heart at all times. My girlfriend did that for me when I was in the Corps and it felt nice to have something so special with me.
