I hear there is a couple of condos for rent in a high rise. They have an open air feeling to them.

You can find somewhat reasonable (for new york) prices in quite a few neighborhoods - Upper East Side, East Village, Astoria (in Queens), Park Slope or Williamsburg (in Brooklyn). The mid-40s/50s on the far west side also have some reasonable pricing, but the neighborhood wouldn't be my ideal for living.

I've lived in New York City my entire life. Manhattan does not equate with cheap. Depending on your salary, you may be able to manage by sharing an apartment with roommates. Otherwise, you will want to hit the other boros that make up NYC. If you are not dead-set on living in Manhattan, and don't mind the commute, Queens or Brooklyn are your best bets.

Happy hunting!

You might want to look at Brooklyn if you are moving to New York, although if you are young and have a good income then East Village would be great.
