It seems like more and more people would rather take pill after pill as a quick fix for their health concerns and the pharmaceutical companies don't mind complying with their demands because the profit is so good. But it's getting to the point where you see a lot of old folks taking 4,5,6 or more pills a day for every condition they suffer from. Do all these pills improve the quality of their lives? NO! THIS IS NO WAY TO LIVE A HEALTHY, HAPPY LIFE! We are an overmedicated society!

I think that society in general, we like to be lazy and take the easy way out. also, people don't have the time and commitment to stick with the psychotherapies that exist today. especially in urban areas that are fast pace, many people don't follow the guidelines to good health and takes lots of medications that could be controlled by diet. I myself see myself doing that alot. I saw a thing about ADHD and now want to take Concerta. I saw a thing on schezophrenia and believe I need anti-psychotics. The power of suggestion can bring a lot into it too. Some meds, (like aricept, catapres, etc) can improve the quality of life if they are taken for the right reasons in the right way...

Hope this answers your question. Good luck...

Because we are programmed to think that way. Look at how many prescription drug commercials we see everyday. We see them so often that we automatically refer back to them when we get sick. I am not a pill taker myself. I only believe in using medication in extreme circumstances. But I am not the "norm" in that thinking. The second reason we live in an over medicated society is because we also live in a very lazy society. Every one wants the quick easy fix.

I hear you on this one! I remember when my Mom died, they wanted to give me a pill for depression, an anti-depressant! I couldn't believe it! I said you've got to be kidding, whatever happened to going thru things the natural way? The people I see at the club are on all kinds of things, if people would just get out and get some exercise 99% of the pills could be eliminated. When I run programs at the club, non members come in and start exercising and drop most of their meds half way thru it. Even the anxiety meds. I agree, it's getting insane and I really tire of it.

Laziness. Plain and simple. Take me for example. I'm too lazy to exercise, eat right, etc. I don't know if my last day is tomorrow so I'm enjoying today. If that means eating a Big Mac meal large sized with a Coke then so be it. And if I'm lucky enough to live to see 60 or 70 and it's obviously too late to get my health in order then I'm gonna be damn glad that there's a pill I can buy to make me live just a lil bit longer. So thank you pills and keep em coming!!

Well said ! A bit of a rant, but I think we get your drift. At the end of the day, Western medicine needs to take a leaf out of eastern medicine, and treat the human as a whole living being rather than a bag of chemicals.

Not neccesarily, I believe that if people would eat right, then most people would have no need for vitamins (of course some people have illnesses that they need extra vitamins) or those stupid weight loss pills. However, medication is neccesary. Some one I know has medical issues and where (here family) are constantly having to get at her to take her meds, she can seriously damage her body if she doesnt! (plus if you took old people off there medications they would not live long lives, they would die!

we pop so many pills because they are most convenient. else we would be required to change the way we live and conduct our lives.i used to take medicines for a prolapsed disc, which in turn caused stomach burn. so i had to take pills for acidity. this made my body water retention go up, and i had swelling in the joints and so on. now i take no drugs and find the sciatica was never unbearably painful. besides my stomach is hale and healthy.

Its part of our collective psyche as a society of fads and cure alls. We Americans love snake oil. Part of the cartesian paradigm which started with descartes and treats bodies as machines. We are starting to think more holistically in terms of health and science, but change takes time.

Most people have grown up thinking science will save humanity. We have misguidedly put our trust in the medical community, giving up our control over our lives and our bodies. Most of these "diseases" are a result of poor lifestyle choices. We are a lazy, decieved people, sitting on our fat asses infront of our TiVo crying Dr. Dr. save me.
