Try http://french.about.com . I use its German equivalent all the time. If the French version is anything like its German counterpart, it will have forums hosted by native French speakers who are willing to help people improve their French. In these forums people can write in or about French.

Another web site that I've heard about, although I haven't tried it myself, is http://www.rosettastone.com .

Language learning can always be "free" if you have access to the internet (as you obviously do), but it will also be very time consuming and difficult to learn on your own. Simply visit foreign websites and start reading if you already have a basic knowledge of the language you want to learn. If you are able, try to make some close friends or pen-pals who speak the language you want to learn. When translating a source language into English, be very careful...many untranslatable idioms (below) are present in every language.

German- "Gleich und gleich gesellt sich gern" literally translates to "Like and like associate as such gladly", but has a meaning similar to our "Birds of a feather flock together."

Spanish- "En boca cerrada, no entran moscas." - "No moths can enter a closed mouth" means "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." in English.

Never make ANY assumptions about a word's meaning, always look words up which you are unsure about. Remember that false cognates (words which sound similar to words that you know in your own language, but have a different meaning ) are the devil's playground!

How to access the French internet- simply type .fr instead of .com at the end of a web address

German- .de

Spain- .es

I don't know one for French (however I could teach you...) - but I taught myself Italian using this website:

http://www.gwc.org.uk/ModernLang/hotpot/Italian2/GrammarIndex.html

That one I just found when I wanted to learn Italian, by searching for "Italian Grammar" on Google - try searching for something similar for French as once you have the grammar, its quite easy to integrate new vocabulary.
