My cat Carmen was 14 when she got cancer. I had to put her down :( I was hoping for a few more years than that 'cause I heard the average was 17-20 yrs. You were lucky to have 21! That's quite remarkable. I've only met one cat that was 21 and in pretty good shape except for the arthritis.

Of coarse the age a cat lives will also depend on whether it's an indoor or outdoor cat. Outdoor cats live an average of 5 years less than an indoor cat because they eat things they shouldn't (mice that may have ingested rat poison for example or rotting food from the garbage etc.) or get injured more often.

Just as a side note, when I was about 6 I had a little stuffed toy dog that I named Little Bit. Never heard of it in real life 'til now. Cool name!

Have a great day!!!

There really is no "average" that has any meaning. Many cats die from cars or predators before they are two years old and others may live in to their "twenties". I have a 22 yr old cat now who is still going strong - despite kidney problems and severe arthritis. My darling Spookie (a neutered male) died of mammary cancer when he was just twelve. I have an 11 year old cat who now has bladder cancer and I cannot know how long he will be able to go on.

I had one that lived to be 18, but the other was 16...we believed the 16 year old got eaten by wolves because we had a wolf scare in our neighborhood at the time and she was an outdoor cat...we never found her body so that we could bury her. =( I have a new cat now, and she is 1 1/2. I got her from a rescue society, the money that I paid for her went to Hurricane Katrina aid which I thought was cool. =) I hope she lives a long time.

My beloved cat ran away when he was 18 years old (human years). My husband (he was my fiance then), went looking for him for 2 days but we never found him. People say he ran away to die but I don't know how true that can be. He bought me another cat about a month later but he only lasted 5 years. He died from a brain aneurysm. All cats are different.

Wow! 21 years old...way to go! My cat, Phudd, lived to 16 years, and my friend had a cat live to the same age, 16.

Well honestly i never had a cat that died of old age due the fact that they all usually all got hit by cars and stuff or never came home...
but so far my cat is like ten years old and still going strong.

That is very nice you got to have him that long. You must have taken real good care of him! When I was young we lived by 1 major road and a back road, so needless to say we went through a lot of cats. My Salem is 4 years old now, thats the longest Ive ever had a cat. : )

i've had my cat ever since i was 5. i'm almost 19 now and he's still going at it with the new kitten. i think this little cat is keeping my cat alive by giving him exercise and stuff. my english teachers cat was 22 then she accidently ran over him on her way to school...so cats live pretty long when they are loved and taken care of.

Well this story is kind of sad....
It started when I was 10. I found the cat and named her Suzy and... well... the next day we found out she was pregnant and she gave birth to 5 kittens but... she is gone and all was left where the kitten. So we decide to let the baby kittens lose when the grew old enough. When I was 11 we let them go. They ran away but we followed and found Suzy on the side of the road rotting... and she was around 20 somthing...
