Furniture Stores will teach you styles of furniture and their eras (a large part of your 1st semester of ID school, and a huge test you'll have to take)

Internships with design firms, even just becoming an assistant or secretary to the firm, you'll be around design and learn many things in the environment.

There really are no jobs that prepare you until you have the formal education to back it up in Design. Decorating is a different story. I would, however, call some local interior designers and find out if they have an intern program. If the do great, if not than ask if you can meet with them to find out how they got into the business. Maybe you can get lucky and find one that will want to mentor you.

Actually going to school is the best answer. I took a course in interior design and decorating. But working at a store that sells paints and fabrics and wallpaper would be a asset too. You could learn the colors and what people like and in your spare time check out what looks good together etc.

Do some research on any Design Firmss in your area. They will usually have some sort of website with at least contact information. They may even have a career link. check that out. i think the best training position would be in probably the front desk position or maybe a clerk if they need one, possibly just an assistant. you have to be very committed and hard working and show your interest though...design firms are not easy to get in to! and you have know how to "deal" with designers too..some of them are pompus and some are straight up stiffs...a lot of them are very fun and out there to work for ;) good luck

Does your school offer any designing classes? If they do, join the class or ask the designing teacher for any ideas that will help you. I would suggest working at furniture store, or a clothing retail store, or a store where they sell fabrics.. You'll be working in an area that will probably help you. Also, if your school doesn't offer any classes related to design. Take an art class or an architecture class, designing is about visualizing your area and those classes will probably help you. =) Good Luck! =)

Fill your portfolio with extremely paid initiatives, fill your Rolodex with people and factors which will are available reachable later, and pay interest to how a company extremely works when you consider which you would be doing the finished element your self sometime.
