How do I prevent the arrow appearing in the bottom left hand corner of icons, when I create a shortcut? I remember there was a setting to disable this effect but I've forgotten it. I am using Windows XP Pro.

TweakUI only removes the phrase "Shortcut to..." from the icon. I want to remove the little arrow. I know it can be done, but I cant remember how. I think you have to change a registry value.

I have been able to do it using Tweak Manager 2.1

well the solution for your problem is...by not making shotcut...and instead of it you better use the real *exe for tht program.

go to

1.> C: drive OR just any drive where you have installed tht software.

2> Now Program files.

3> Look for tht desired program folder.

4> You would definetly find a EXE of tht program/software in tht folder.

5> Copy tht *EXE//// i repeat COPY tht exe.

6> Paste it on desktop.

And now you wouldnt face tht lil arrow like it was in shortcut link.

Important:: Well, This exe would take more space then the shotcut. As you know desktop screen is among first thing tht appears on booting ,,,,this cld delay ur booting a bit.

see! this exe would take memory (as much as ..it is in actual)
while shortcut takes only 1KB,,,it has only tht path(C:/programfile/
/program folder/program exe)

hope this would solve ur problems! :)

If you are comfortable editing the registry directly, here is what you could do... else considering installing a Windows Tweak software and doing it from there.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Shell Icons

Backup the key before making any edits.

In the right-pane, create a new String value named "29"

Double-click 29 and set its data to:
C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,50 (an empty icon)

Close Registry Editor.

To apply the changes instantly, follow this

Right-click Desktop, choose Properties
Click the Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button
Choose Icon from the drop-down list
Set it's size to 31 and press OK, OK.

The changes will be applied now. Repeat the above steps and then set the Icon size back to 32 (defaults). The above steps are required to force Windows to redraw the icons.

If u cut an icon instead of copy it, then it will be a link not a shortcut to a link so the lil arrow wont appear.

Get rid of the shortcut and use the real icon for the link.

Right click the icon, select "properties", select "change icon" and if you have the original icon you can change it.
