Christians DO believe in pagan gods. Yahweh for example. They just don't know it, or admit it.

Yahweh was originally a sky god - a god of thunder and lightning. He was associated with mountains and was called by the enemies of Israel 'a god of the hills'. His manifestation was often as fire, as at Mount Sinai and in the burning bush.

Originally, the four consonants YHWH represented the four members of the Heavenly Family: Y represented El the Father; H was Asherah the Mother; W corresponded to He the Son; and H was the Daughter Anath. In accordance with the royal traditions of the time and region, God's mysterious bride, the Matronit, was also believed to be his sister.

All gods given human qualities are fiction.

I will have to trust my ancestors on this one. For instance the Egyptians were pagans and in the Bible God destroyed their army who chasing the Christians (or at that time Jews). The thought of one entity makes more sense to me than many gods. I dont have more than one father do I? Its kinda of the same thing. There is one big daddy in the sky looking over all. It makes much more sense than many mini-gods or whatever.

But it is a very thought provoking question, atleast you are objective in your quest.

By the way, no one knows for sure who or what God is. But trusting the ancestors of my past and the fact that 90% of the world believes in one entity (no matter the religion, Christians, Jews, Muslims). I must assume there is a good reason why most of them, religions that is, believe in one entity.

I'm Christian and I know there are pagans and they (pagans) worship many little gods.

My God, the living God beat the grave. Jesus Lives!

The Living God is in the supernatural realm. He is Spirit and I worship Him in spirit and in truth. I worship the Living God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!

Anything you worship (give your time, energy and money too) is your God. So, if it's not the Living God...then it's an idol ((little "g"od)).

Everyone worships something, worship can be: money, career, TV, sex, cars, house, your own body, etc. Face it, we were wired to worship and we do. Question is, what is that you worship?

God never denied in the Scriptures there were idols that people worshiped as gods. They just happen to be little statues, that can't respond.

***MisFit*** You are correct there are other supernatural beings...the Living God, angels; we can't forget the fallen Lucifer/Satan and 1/3 of the fallen angels...

Hope that helps!

ooooooooooo, very interesting question.

I guess you could say that... for me, faith is a matter of how the truth resonated deep within me. I find having one God who is THE creator of all more comforting and (odd to some) logical than a large group of gods. I can see why the Greeks would have liked that system, though, having a god for different things who can identify with them. But they were almost too human in some respects, and they could be wrong. I don't think I could believe in a god that was fallible.

In a time long before the rise of the Greek and Roman civilization there was the God of Abraham. The men that were His spokesmen foretold of a Savior coming among men to stand in their place before the Judgment of God and take His punishment for breaking His Laws. This event's foretelling is recorded in the Old Testament. It can be read today in:
Psalms 22:12-18
Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
No other god has any such evidence. Jim

To believe that there is only one GOD and that god is the god of the christains is the ONLY GOD, then you must deny that there are no other supernatural spirits. God is a supernatural being, however he is not the only one.

SInce directed at Christains, you will have to study more than just the bible. As there is a history to christainity.

Well, the bible does say that "The Lord thy Lord thy God is a jealous God and thou shalt not have any "gods" before me"...I'm interested in that answer as well.

Edit: hmmm, I notice that one poster wrote that the Greek gods were "humanlike"...So is the one portrayed in the bible; he has a fit and will torture those for unbelief, he has the human emotions of jealously, anger, sadness, etc. The bible was obviously written by men trying to say they speak for a supreme being, they failed.

But the xian god IS fallible, he tried to correct humanity and failed, he tried to change the pharaohs'' mind and failed. He made man, gave him one rule and man screwed up. So he failed in his creation as well.
He slaughtered children and failed in his cause:
Jeremiah 2:30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

IN the ten commandments God tells us, you shall have no gods before me. If there were no other gods/religions he would not command us aginst them.
