That's nice that you want to keep your puppy company with another puppy. I'd go with just about any puppy as long as they get along it shouldn't matter what the breed is. Besides, it's better to let your heart decide as you look.
I did the same thing for my first cat--unfoturnatly she was 11 yrs. old and too set in her ways to adapt to a new kitten. She never did warm up to him. When she passed and my mom gave me another kitten, they got got along fine because they were both younger. Good time to get another puppy.
Have a great day and say 'meow' to your puppy from my two kitties Figaro and Rosina.

well...that's up to you. sometimes you get 2 puppies together and they create mischief where one pup alone just sleeps most of the day. border collies are VERY VERY smart, so just imagine what 2 of them can come up with :-)

On the other hand, I feel the same as you - I have 3 dogs....I got my second dog as a playmate for my first, the only problem was that my 1st dog (a border collie) didn't appreciate having a puppy climbing all over her all the time (she was about 2 at the time), now - they're best friends. So if you are thinking about getting a puppy, do it now while your dog is still young and playful. When we added dog #3, dog #2 was still young and playful, not a puppy...but still playful so he took the job of entertaining the puppy while dog #1 just stayed away. Now, all 3 of them are on the same page...they play about the same amount and no one gets on any one else's nerves.

Also consider....do you have time for 2 dogs? I mean, if you're already gone all day and not giving dog #1 a whole lot of attention, how much will you have to spare for dog #2?

good luck

Are you sure you really want another dog? If you are getting another dog because you want one that if fine but if it is for a playmate for the other dog I would strongly question why. As long as a border collie has enough toys, bones, etc...she will be content. When your home spend as much time with her as possible. Border Collies will work and work to make you happy. If your gone 8-10 hours of they day as most people are don't sweat it too much. Puppy will be fine. If your really worried, how about on a weekend or after work going to a bark park? Or taking her to doggy daycare about once or twice a week? Really no need to double your cost on pets if your content with one dog.

We have three dogs but live in the country. One is a border collie. She could honestly careless about the other dogs. On a rare occassion she will play with the German Shepherd. She just seems happier to be out on her own doing her thing.

If your dead set on having a second dog...go to humane society, ASPCA, or a shelter take puppy with you. After selecting a dog introduce your puppy to it to see how they get along. Do this in a vacant room or outside. Might want to call first to be sure they will allow your dog in, most do.

border collies need a lot of exercises; they are working dogs. you should have someone come and walk your dog in the middle of the day, so that she at least gets out for a while. at that age, especially, she should not be left alone all day long.
if you want to get another pet that requires less exercises, get a cat to keep the dog company. oftentimes they get along very well, especially if the puppy is still young. my cat and dog used to play together all the time!

I would get another Border Collie. But I think also that any other highly active breed, of similar size, would probably work out. My BC pup has older dogs to keep her company for the short time we ever need to leave the home, but we are considering another BC pup that's closer to her age and activity level to keep her company.

Tho another option is to see if you have a friend or a doggy daycare in the area where she can spend her days away from you. BC's are very sensitive types and can become neurotic and destructive if not properly stimulated enough.

You shouldn't leave the puppy alone because it is sill getting used to its new home.so try to take him with you when you leave because regardless of how many puppies you have they will all need the same type of care.
