long and thin is the best way to sail, as it requires less effort than a wider ship. also because viking ships use man power, no engines here meaning power is at a premium, so the easiest way to move over water is a thin ship. The length of the ship is due to the amount of oarsman there is, a faster ship needs more men, which means a longer ship to house the oarsmenon other side of the ship. the idea is same with rowing in the olympic games you see on tv.

Nothing to do with their diet, the ships were long as they often used oars to make landfall and with a longer ship they could put more people along the sides to row so they could get to stealling things quicker. The shape was also influenced by fluid dynamics, a long sleek shape will go through the water easier than a short fat boat thus allowing the ship to move quicker and more quietly.

Vikings were very clever people who discovered that a long ship will go faster because it slices through the water. They were made so that they could land on beaches and that they could go in very shallow water.

The length-to-breadth ratio combined with the shallow draft allowed longships to land on any beach and penetrate virtually any waterway in Europe.
