I'm not sure either, but it seems very cruel doesn't it? Our dog barks a lot but we're careful to keep her inside, but still she does need to get out. Someone made that suggestion to me about Coco, but I could never do that.
I'm glad you feel the same way.

It is a very minor surgery, they don't remove a voice box, just snip the vocal cords, and the dog is still able to bark/.whine, it is just muted. Is it better someone takes it to the shelter where it is euthanized instead of this very minor surgery, because they are unsuccessful at stopping the barking? The dog would probably also be much happier because he isn't getting yelled at all the time and the family isn't getting complaints from the neighbors and being forced to get rid of him.

What I don't get is the same people that are appalled at debarking are the same people who think the very major surgery of spaying/neutering (a very uneccessary surgery, if you are responsible) is just fine.

Good post Nanook!

Other posters - so debarking is "cruel" but citronella or e-collars are just great???

That is a very cruel thing to do to a dog. I have 3 dogs and they bark when someone is around or if there is an animal around. I have used bark collars but they don't work. I would rather have my dog barking and letting me know that someone is around than having someone break in. Of course my big dog would not let anyone in that he didn't know anyway. But to have a dog debarked just because you don't like the sound of their barking is so very cruel.

Yes dogs can still be debarked. Usually done when neighbors complain about excessive or night time barking.
I would not do it to mine though. They are not outside and if they are and start to bark, I bring them in.

Yes they do.My friend had a poodle that barked a lot because she didnt know the people here and a person turned her in because she barked for 2 hours when she was at church.Didnt give the woman a chance to trane her so she took the dog and had her fixed so she could not bark.she tried to and it sounded like she had a cold.My dog was 4 mo old when I brought him here and he barked at everyone and I got turned in but I said no way as he is a watch dog.He is 7 now and trained so he does not bark so mutch.Signed Free Little lillie.

Some vets still debark dogs yes. Others have caved into pressure from animal rights people and have stopped debarking or the state/town has caved in and has made debarking, cropping/docking illegal as well.

None of the three procedures I mentioned are dangerous or bad for the dog, but some people just have the need to control other people's lives!

Yes, But a bark collar is a less cruel way of dealing with the situation-it trains the dog not to bark!!

I know that there is a special coller that dogs have to stop them from barking. It works like this: When the dog barks the coller sends a small electric shock throgh the body of the dog. I don't know if they still do that. You can bring them to vet so that the vet can opperate.

what is wrong with you people?! what you are suggesting is cruel. i hope people operate on you to remove your hands so that you cant type any more cruel answers. it is illegal to abuse and harm animals. vets don't do it any more not because they gave in to pressure, but because it is unnecessary and cruel! if you don't want a dog to bark, don't get a dog! otherwise love them as the beautiful creatures that they are. and work with them to train them to be happy and well adjusted.
