I have a dog that just had puppies October 1st. She had 11 and all are well except on one tiny female. I have been bottle feeding her the milk replacement from PetSmart as directed but she does't seem to be filling out any. She is strong and acts fine. Just very puny. She is only a week and a half old and I just don't want to lose her if possible. I want to carry her to the vet but my husband is against it. He says "nature will take it's course". Of course, I am not real fond of that answer. Any suggestions?

Go with your instincts. If you think the little one needs to see the vet, take her. Wouldn't you rather know if there was something wrong instead of guessing?

Does the mother feed her at all? I had a baby Peke in one of my litters that was so tiny he fit in the palm of my hand. He was seen by the vet and it was discovered that he had an open fontanel (soft spot on top of head) and the vet said he would not live as it was not closing up. He was named Hercules and I fed him baby cereal mixed with the Esbelac every 4 hrs. He loved being brushed and was soooo tiny. Mom would not have anything to do with him. He lived 8 weeks had a seizure & I lost him. He weighed 8 ozs. when he passed on. If you think the pup has a chance take her to the vet and keep up the good work. Keep her warm too.

I feel for you. However, your husband may have a point. Take the puppy to the vet and decide. There may be something really wrong so mom is rejecting it. Hope things improve.

If it was my puppy, I'd keep on doing just what you're doing. You said she's strong and acts fine, but is slow to grow. If she eats well and isn't crying (which she would do if she were hungry or in pain), just keep on feeding her. I had a runt in one of my litters who was also slower to grow, but she turned out just fine. Good luck with her!

well if you dont take her to the vet then there's not much you can do besides what you are. Just give her some special attention, keep bottle feeding her and hopefully it will get her stronger. Maybe if you keep at your husband he will let you take her to the vet!
