This guy I work with is spreading a rumor that my boss promoted me two weeks ago because "he wants to do me." It is simply not true and I am married. I hate confronting people but this guy has annoyed me on several occasions and now trying to ruin my reputation. I work for a big company and stuff like this doesn't play out too well. What should I do?

Oh, boy. He's not just mean, he's sexually harassing you by creating a "hostile work environment," to use the federal government's definition. Under the law, the company is responsible for his behavior, so you have the responsibility of reporting it to a supervisor and to HR. If he continues his behavior and the company does nothing to stop it, your next stop is at the EEOC.

If you work for a large company I would call someone in Human Resources. Rumors are one thing but this falls in the Sexual Harassment category. If your company is like many others they will set up a meeting with you, your boss, the culprit and a HR Representative to discuss the accusations. That can be the end of it or you can go further if you don't feel enough was accomplished. I'm sorry you're having to go through this. It's not fun! I pray everything works out well for you. God bless!

You must discuss this with a female manager/boss immediately, not with Human Resources people. Your company may have serious liability-related rules and regulations pertaining to employee behavior AND reporting inappropriate behavior. Wouldn't YOU if you had a company? And, you need to take an assertiveness training course for women.

Seriously, picklepuss, I'd go directly to your boss with a company attorney or your own. Trust me. No one will think you are over-playing the matter by bringing an attorney. Do NOT speak with anyone about this until you consult with an attorney. At the meeting with your boss and your attorney, inform him of the rumor and that it involves HIM. Tell him that it involves YOU, too, but not until he hears that this rumor is "filed" so to say in everyone's mind underl HIS name and HIS reputation.

i would go directly to the human resource manager and make it known what he is doing and let them handle it. this is so improper and he should be taught a lesson in office ethics.. It sounds as though he is very child like. I would not confront him personally especially since you are not comfortable doing that and he make it worse. However, he may understand when he gets a written warning from the human resource department or worse loose his job. Perhaps if he spent more time doing his job and less time on office gossip and spreading rumors he would not be over looked for a promotion. Good luck and God bless

I would go to his supervisor and explain the situation and how it's interfering with your work environment. I would also ask the supervisor if there could be a group discussion between you, the supervisor, and the guy spreading rumors. This gives you the opportunity to show that your the responsible one in the situation and also allows you to openly talk about the situation with him without fear that he'll turn around and twist your words around. This also lets your supervisor know that there are issues with this guy and if future problems occur perhaps he shouldn't work with your company anymore. I wish you luck! I know it sucks to be put in that kind of awkward situation especially at work!

The best thing to do regarding rumors of any sort is to simply ignore them and not participate either in spreading, confirming or denying them. A rumor like this, if it gets back to your boss, seems like the sort of thing that could lead in the man being disciplined or fired, which seems like it would definitely take care of the problem.

If the rumor is a big enough problem, then I would go to the boss directly. Tell him that an embarassing rumor has been started regarding your recent promotion. Don't point fingers - it should be easy enough for your boss to find out who started the rumor, and you'll be keeping yourself out of this, other than putting a stop to the rumor.

Go to your HR department immediately, and have NO contact with this person whatsoever, until the matter is resolved - hopefully in a way that ends their employment at your workspace! Sounds like you took the job he wanted, good for you! His behaviour about it shows he is likely not mature enough to handle a professional promotion anyway. Make sure YOUR conduct about this, does.

The guy is a jerk and the only way he can reconcile the fact that he didn't get promoted is to act like you didn't deserve the promotion. I think people will see right through him.

I was getting divorced, I told nobody, but this guy had a friend in personnel who told him about my benefit changes, etc.And he told everybody all my personal info. He even called my house to see if my husband would answer, I had a private number.

Therefore I didn't bother with personnel in my division, I made an appt. with the head of HR for the entire co. He came to see me!
And I was very satisfied with the way he listened to me and the actions he took. That guy never messed with me again and his gossip about others decreased.
