Ingestion (eating) seems to be the only way and it mostly will affect animals that are grazing on it. Assume the person you are talking about hasn't been grazing . . . ;~)
However, this does not take into account individual variations -- SOME people are or become allergic to certain things that are totally innocuous to everyone else. For example, there is a small portion of the population that is highly allergic to Virginia Creeper, reacting like to Poison Ivy or even worse, while most people have no problem with it whatsoever.
So, that said, it may be something like that -- an individual reaction. The only other possiblity I can think of is a reaction to something ON the plant, like bug spray, fertilizer, etc.

I spend a lot of time in my garden, and Have 5 bleeding heart bushes. They have never made me sick. R U eating them? I don't think there on the edible list. They do irritate my allergies though. but anything that grows does.

people will try any thing for a buzz. morning glory seeds contain a holusenogenic. the government sprays them with a chemical to discourage their use, but they are not illegal. the seeds can be processed so that you can "trip" as though you took a hit of lsd.

my sister in law got horrible sick and she had some flower in her house, the dr had her take them all out and she was well in days, so if it is in the house take it out to see if they get well.
