you put the apostrophe before the s to show that someone owns the object or that the word 'is' is missing e.g you could say
the dog's ball
or the dog's bad
but when you are showing that a PLURAL owns something (i.e a word which has an s on the end) you put it after the s for example:
my parents' wedding
my mom's cooking is correct because you only have one mom

The difference is between a singular Mom... i.e. " My Mom's cooking is the best"... versus a plural Mom... "the Cub Scouts moms' cooking was the best"

You would put My Mom's cooking as in My Mom is cooking.
You would put My Moms' cooking as if you had more than one Mom.

If you put it before s as in the case of mom's, that means it is that of your mom.
In the other case, namely, putting it after the s (moms'), it means those of your moms!
The right thing is to put the apostrophe before s. Mom's is right.

my moms' cooking is only correct if you have more than one mom. It is a singular/plural distinction.
"my mom's cooking" could also be a sentence saying your mom is cooking. But it's the correct possessive also.

The " ' " after the word shows possesion. The " ' " in the word is conjunctive.
My moms' cooking------shows possesion, your mom.
My mom's cooking----------is actually My mom is cooking.
If you have more than one mom then you would use My moms cooking.
