The problem with most religions is that they try to answer life, the universe and everything. ie. that their particular truth is better or greater than other religion's truth. Although they all profess to have respect for other religions this is virtually impossible when you are trying to agree on life, the universe and everthing, they are afterall everything.
One religion says Allah created this keyboard, another says God, Budha etc. If you cant agree on a keyboard then how are you gonna agree on anything?
And that disagreement is a basis for war and conflict, let alone loss of respect.

This question is about freedom of speech rather than freedom of religion. Everyone has the right to say and/or believe that Islam is a violent religion, or that atheists are evil, or whatever else they want. What they don't have the right to do is prevent a preson from being Muslim, atheist, etc. in the United States.

You should respect ones right to religion. The problem now is there so many so called christians who want to dicktate what someone should do and how they should do it if they dont like it then no one should do it I think each to his own if you don't like it then don't do it but leave me alone it should be my choice because when the time comes im the one to be judged for my actions

I think it's a case of "majority rules". People who are a majority tend to have more power to push their will onto others than minorities. Seeing as how most people in the world seem to be members of one of the dominant religions (Islam and Christianity), and they tend to be the most willful of people (the need to "spread the word" and prosyletize porves this), they believe that the numbers speak for themselves and that they don't need to respect others' minority beliefs or to even have to explain some of their own religions' more unsavory aspects.
Look at most hard-core adherents of Christianity on Yahoo! Answers here: they feel the need to constantly spout off on their beliefs and constantly condescendingly mock and chide other non-Christian belief systems and the people who believe them. That includes making fun of and disrespecting atheists.
One can note that the number of Christians making inflammatory statements and posting "flaming" hateful speech about other non-Christians FAR outnumbers the number of atheist, pagan, or other non-Christian posters doing such things. Most atheists, or pagans, or other non-Christians, are perfectly happy just going about their usual business in peace without disrespecting anybody- they don't feel the need to impose their will onto others.

I think respect for others and their beliefs would make this world a better place. Of course, in order for there to be respect, there must be some degree of understand, which is sorely lacking.

You don't have to respect anybodys beliefs or lack thereof.
It just makes you a better person to be accepting of others. You look more mature and you're more likely to get respect back.

First of all, if you live in America you have the freedom to be any religion you want. Nobody tells you that you have to respect thier religion, only the freedom.

U need to have a wild heart to accept everything not just religion.
To me all religion is the same...teaching all fellow earthing to be good man and woman.
Jesus / god / Allah/ Buddha are all great teachers, teaches the subject that they familiar with...I only respect the teachers, not the students...coz I myself are just another student, just like you/me/he/she
