Motherof3, that is what I was thinking. What is up with that? It almost seems like the "Devil" told the truth and that "God" lied.

1) its the Serpent. the original text does NOT say that the Serpent was the devil, or satan or any such thing.

2) no, he did not lie.

the serpent said 2 things.

A) you won't die.
B) you'll become as god's.

God said they'd surely die. ... now, if we're in the wilderness and point at a plant and say you'll die if you eat that, tha tmeans poison. that means that if you eat it, you'll get sick, and die, right away, because something of that plant is lethal.
they ate. they lived for quite some time afterwards.

B, the serpent said they'd become as gods. well, with the capacity humans have for distinguishing right from wrong, and the capacity for awareness, ect... compared to animals, we really are.

have you considered the possibility that God deliberately deceived them, in order to make the concious choice to disobey, ... grasping that free will.... even though they had been told it would be a bad thing.

No, he didn't. If you look close enough, you'll see it was Adam who actually lied. God didn't talk to Eve... he talked to Adam who then told Eve she shouldn't even touch the tree or she'd die. The "Devil", as shown in this story, isn't actually a bad guy. Other writings show that the "Devil" is actually doing God's Will (Job for example).

The question isn't about who lied, but rather that Eve was disobedient. God meant that her "death" would be through sin, not naturally. Satan didn't lie in that his statement about Eve being "as God" meant that her knowledge and capacity for sin would increase. She was already "as God" in that she and Adam were created in God's own image, therefore explaining the use of the word "beguiled" when Eve was explaning to God why she'd eaten of the forbidden fruit.

Part of what satan said was true but look at the steps he took.

Genesis 3

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

These were all half-truths and that is more dangerous then out right lies

1: satan caused doubt as to what GOD said: "Ye shall not surely die" . "Ye shall not surely die" God made humans to live forever and all of us will exist somewhere forever. satan did tell the truth in that their bodies did not die...he lied because their soul died the moment they ate the fruit. Death after all is separation. Their soul was separated from fellowship with God.

2: satan suggested that God was holding something back from them that they should be able to have: "God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened" We are often told the same lie today. God is holding back from us because HE does not want us to have fun. We are not told about the hidden cost of sin. That sin cost us more then we can afford and it always cost others then the one doing it. (see first link below)

3: satan told them they could be as gods. This is the very sin of pride that caused satan to fall along with 1/3 of the other angles. Many are actually told that we can become gods too. It plays on our pride. God has always been. We were created. God is self-sustaining. He does not need us but he wants us. You can accept His offer for adopting into His family within the next few moments. Check the 2nd link below

Motherof3 is correct but your interpretation is incorrect. God cannot sin. Therefore He did not lie. God Bless!
Peace be with you (John 14:27)

God said if you disobey you will die.
The devil said "You will positively not die."
One of them lied.
Look around, can you find Eve?
No?
Guess the devil was the liar then......

Yes and no. He did deceive her when he told her that she would not die. That was a lie. When he told her that if she ate the fruit, she would know the difference between good and evil and that was the truth.

i don't think he lied, maybe misled her... he told her she would know the difference between good and evil. the first person who actually started trying to pass the buck was adam. he blamed eve AND God for giving her to him.
