I would first soak the area in a diluted vinegar/hot water solution. The vinegar should neutrilize the odor. Now, you'll have an area of carpet that smells like a pickle, so let it dry then apply some purchased carpet cleaner, like Bissell spray etc.

Bissel pet and odar carpet cleaner found at your local store. Its for steam cleaning machines but it can also be used straight out of the bottle. Its about $20.00 and it last a very long time. It really works and leaves behind a nice pleasant odar.
My grandaughter leaked out of her diaper and wet by new mattress and its white I used this product and it removed the odar as well as the urine mark. You,d never know that any accident happened.
Its great stuff.

Buy or rent a carpet cleaner. Most hardware stores, or Walmart carry them. Make sure to use warm to hot water in the water tank. The hotter the water the better the cleaning job it does.
