I want to make room in my front garden to park my partners car but there is a lampost blocking what would be the entrance to the driveway. I havent rung the council yet. Does anyone know what it would cost and if they would oblige?

You would have to speak to the Highways agency regarding this matter. The minimum cost you would be looking at would be around £2500. The cost would have to include the path being dug up. Electricians to move the cables. Possibly extra cables being laid. There is also the chance that other companies have pipes/cables etc in the exact place that you wish to have dug up. The Highways agency would then charge you for dropping the kerb outside your home. The best thing to do would be to put it in writing and ask them to give you a full breakdown of the costs if they were happy to move the lamppost.

All street furniture is under the control of the highways department. They might move it but they are often stubborn, because they will cite the spacing and H&S etc.

Knowing that a 400mm high street sign cost £500 to move 2 metres I would expect it to be a couple of grand.

Also, if you are putting another car off the road you will need a doubel dropcurb and need permission for that, again from the highways department.

Was the lampost there before the driveway, or vice versa. If the lampost is obstructing your drive I woud say they are obliged to move it. Is it red on the corner, that is my favourite marking spot.

Do you own the property?

If so, that is one story, if not, rent? check with landlord.

good luck
