I have an idea for a movie and want to write a script. I've never written a script before, but I know there are script formatting software programs out there. Should I take a short class on screenwriting (there is one coming up that is just 5 sessions) or just read info that's out there? I want more than just how to format it...but ideas on dialogue, detail, character development, etc.

Take english classes or creative writing classes. Then read past sreenwrites. Any class that is going t oteach you to write a screenplay in 5 sessions sounds fishy. Find someone that is into theatre and buddy up with them. Knowledge by association is the best knowledge you can get.

I took a screenwriting class in college. Actually it was called Writing for Stage, Screen, and Radio or something like that.
The biggest advantage of the class was how they tought proper story arc and plot structure as they relate to scripts rather than short stories or novels.

I would look more into that class you want to take and find out how long each session is. At five sessions you will want to have at least 1.5 hours per class to get anything good out of it. Also try and find any information you can about the instructor and (if possible) what work s/he has had put into production.

I would also suggest taking some creative writing classes.
