'They' say you should do it before bed as it does not stain your sheets - let it dry prperly though.
Maybe exfoliate before you moisturise to stop the patches appearing.

Ive tried it, it was ok but wasnt that dark enough. Have you tried exfoliating and shaving your legs. Then once your out of the shower pat yourself dry. When your properly dry, rub in moisturiser.
However do all this a couple of hours before you apply the johnson holiday skin, it didnt rub off onto my clothes but still be careful.
Also loreal spray and gel is good if you want a quick effect of tan it shows up after an hour, looks natural (not orange!), but dont put any light clothes on straight away wait till your not sticky coz this does stained (I learnt this after putting on a new top - bugger!)

To get the best results wax or shave the day before you apply jhs, and exfoliate your skin regularly, about twice a week is good. when you apply jhs do so evenly but sparingly around ankles, feet, elbows and knees as the skin is thinner there and can get patchy. It will rub off on your clothes a bit but that can mostly be avoided if you apply before bed. I use it and think its great. I hope this helps you.

I have the same proble, the reason normal fake tan does it is because of dry skin areas but this cant be true as this ones moisturised!! my friend who is a beautician says mine is due to the fact i shower everyday, some parts of the skin will lose it quicker than others. sounds like you are putting it on right though...you are not alone! (and yes it does come out on clothing sometimes, stick to the darks, one of my bras has turned tan colour and isnt coming out in the wash! and in ref to the first answer - it does stain the bed sheets even when you try and let it dry as it is moisturiser it doesnt dry)

Yes, I've had this with the same product myself. Try the Garnier product instead - I found that I didn't get patches with that one. There is a bit of colour comes off onto white underwear with any of these tanning moisturisers, but I find it washes out ok. But you probably wouldn't want to be wearing pale colours on a hot date .......... just in case.
The other tip is to keep a little exfoliating sponge handy in the bathroom. Should you wake up and spot a dreaded uneven patch on your arm or leg, a gentle rub should 'sand' it away.
Keep looking fabulous girl!!

Hi I've used it all summer. Shower, exfoliate with a coarse sponge all over especially elbow knees wrists. Then apply a moisturiser let it soak in for 15 minutes. Then apply johnsons tan, dont put it on your elbows knees or wrists they have different skin tones anyway and only look like rust if you do apply it there. Let it dry in and bobs your uncle

Try putting a little bit of normal moisturiser all over first then put the Johnson's holiday skin after this should stop any dry patches slurping up the fake tan to quick. I put my tan on before I go to bed and wake up tanned, yes it does stain the sheets a bit but it does wash out in my experience. :o)

I would say that you need to make sure your skin is well cared for before putting on the lotion, tanning lotions do get patchy when on dry areas of skin, it is best is you fully exfoliate before putting the lotion on – get yourself a puff or a looffa, alternatively get yourself a good body scrub.
I haven't found it marks clothes because the self-tan is so minimal within the lotion, but self-tan will stain clothing, the only way to avoid that is to avoid getting it on your clothing, don't wear whites or light colours right after applying the lotion – best to apply when out of the shower or bath, when naked and when the only clothes you will be putting on is bed cloths or casual clothing rather than your good clothes.

Put it on at night. It's like a fake-tan which needs to develop. You wouldn't put on fake-tan, get dressed and go about your day where it'll rub off and not develop properly. Let it dry for about ten minutes before getting into bed. You say you're rubbing it in well in certain areas. If you over-rub it could be rubbing off and absorbing on your hands.Rub small amounts in lightly and evenly. I'm white as a ghost and use Johnson's all the time. It works very well for me. If you're still getting dark patches apply sparingly on those areas. If it gets on your clothes it washes out.

the patchy parts are from skin build up. Try doing a dry exfoliation. Use a buffing glove and rub your body before applying the lotion. This will remove any dead skin cells built up on the surface.
I don't know if it stains

I don't think there is any kind of fake tanning product out there that goes on properly, the only way to get a proper tan is to go to a hot country. Also i think it probably would stain your clothes as most of these products do.
