I have approximately 70 processes running on my computer and I am more than certain most of them are not needed. I forgot what program I need to use to enable/disable each process and I need a list that can tell me what each exe. file does so I don't disable important processes. Does anyone know?

Its for Windows XP.

Thanks!

Although I appreciate the help; I'm not looking for programs. I have been given advice before about how to do all of this manually; however, it has been a while and I forgot the required steps.

And I already know the taskmanager/ctrl alt del function...there is a program I can run on Windows to disable the process at start up and I'm trying to find that one.
Thanks again!

Well, before you do anything create a restore point just in case things go wrong. Next, here are the websites which can help you identify which services to disable (Windows services start processes):

"How to Speedup and Secure your PC" -- written by John TP (http://www.johntp.com/2006/04/28/how-to-speedup-and-secure-your-pc/)

"Black Viper Services Configurations" -- written by Black Viper
(http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12)

These 2 articles will help you determine which services you can disable and which ones you should keep. If you run across a process that you do not recognize, go to Process Library (http://www.processlibrary.com/). On the website, just enter the process you are interested in (e.g. notsafe.exe) and hit [Search]. It will display what the process does and whether or not you should keep it.

To stop and disable services, go to Start menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Right click any service you want to end. From the contextual menu, click [Stop]. Right click it again and choose "Properties." Change from "automatic" to "disable."

Te best thing is is to get startup organizer, the apps allows you to chose which programs run whenever you start up windows. Short of that you can go - start - run, and type msconfig. this will bring up the dialoge box where you choose startup.
