From experience i wouldn't repair you cav as it will keep expecting it every year, they are terrible for corrosion as are fords. peugeots are galvinised so dont rust. at the end of the day there are plenty of medium sized used cars to suit your needs and budget. With the closure of rover, parts are scarse and the part prices are rising due to this reason. hondas are great cars as are volkswagens, renaults are good cars too, peugeots and citroens are okay if you look after them.

you should be able to get a new diesel tank and two new tyres for a cavalier for 700 quid
you could also buy a rover 400 for that money with a bullet proof honda engine that will live longer than prince william

for £700 you can get a peugeot 605 the biggest peugeot in its day and supremely comfortable with brilliant ride and handling the top of the range 3.0 sve has every creature comfort imaginable and is automatic the cheapest one is the 2.0 sli but thats a manual gearbox and they do have a notchy gearbox and a weak gear linkage system the best thing about 605s though is they look stunning even today especially if you get one with a body kit in black or silver and they have more legroom in the back than a spaceship...lol look one up on ebay

Mate, if that's your total budget, why don'y you get the local paper and find something that has 12 mths MOT for about 350 quid - normally quite a few to be had - you get at least a years worth of motoring for sod-all cash, and if it fails the next MOT you ain't lost much, just get another one!

Look around in the local papers, there is always a grandad selling his prized car. There are good bargains to be had, concentrate on Japanese, avoid French, good hunting.
