Your cat is 16 and his body is starting to break down. He could be starting kidney shut down and he will drink a lot of water. Another problem could be Diabetes, this also causes a lot of water consumption. Take your cat to the Vet and he will properly diagnose his problem and put him on the appropriate medications or food for that problem. I had a cat that lived to be 22 so hopefully your cat still has some years left in him.
Good luck and take him to your Vet.

I have have raised generations of cats for over 40 years, most living to about 20 years old. I found at around 15 years or so, when their water consumption goes up, is there kidnies. The current tests for kidney function dosen't indicate a problem until the kidney function has already decreased by 75%. Do not dispair. Even if that is the case, you can get sterile water like an IV bottle from you vet and he'll show you how to administer fluids directly under the skin at the scruff of neck every two to three days and that can prolong their lives for many years.

Usually around your cats age the kidneys do start failing. The excessive water drinking is a sign of this. Or yes it could also be diabetics. Your vet will run a simple blood test to determine which it is. With treatment your cat can still live many more years.

I definity agree with the others. Please note any other behavior your cat is exhibiting, and make an appointment ASAP. Diabetes or Kidney problems. I had an older cat that was diagnosed with kidney problems. When you go to the vet, there will most likely be blood drawn and test where you may have to wait a day or two for the results.

Good luck to you and your kitty.

as others said it might be a couple things although cause of his age diabetes is possible. My older cat has diabetes, she got it around 14 and we all though that would be it for her, but she lived to the ripe old age of 22!

Get your cat checked out as soon as possible

Most cats end up with kidney problems in their later years. That is probably his problem. Or he could be diabetic. The only way to tell is to take him to the vet.

My cats always drink a lot of water. I'm not sure why, but I only feed mine dry catfood. So it might just make them more thirsty.

You need to get him to a vet ASAP. This a sign of Renal Failure or Diabetes....both which can kill him in a matter of weeks if left untreated.
