This statement was made by a fundmentalist on the site fstdt.com. His comment is in regards to a quote made by Benjamin Franklin,

'I will not agree with your words, but fight to the death to allow you to speak them.'

Jusy wondering how many people who practice religious faith believe that if I don;t have anything nice to say about god, that my right to free speech should be stripped from me. Also do you believe that only insane crazy people would fight to allow all people of all opinions to be able to express those opinions.

Or do you think this guy is just crazy?

That quote was made by the philosopher Voltaire long before Franklin might have said it.

Only trying to help you be correct you know how some people on here are sticklers.

And yes I do encourage intelligent debate and the exchange of ideas in a situation where we can both walk away at the end without violence. That person does however have every right to be entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong I feel they are. Actions bring violence intelligent discussions don't.

Benjamin Franklin was aware that the principle of free speech and free expression is a fundamental for any liberal democratic society. There can be no conditions or exceptions-even creationist plankton have a right to express their beliefs.

I am a firm believer in the Catholic faith. I will defend anyone rights to free speech even when they do not agree with my beliefs. I do believe however that we as a culture have lost a sense of civility. Just because we disagree with each other does not mean that we must resort to name calling and crude language. All of us should be able to state our own beliefs. We should also attempt to truly understand the beliefs of others, not agree with just understand. Then we can engage in respectful dialog.

I truly do believe that everyone should have the right to express their opinions, but only in a way that is respectful to others.

Regardless of what they have to say, everyone has the right to be heard. Therefore, although I may disagree with what you are saying, I will defend your right to say it.
