Organ donation is a great program, however it is very uninformed, misinformed and undereducated. In oder to donate your vital organs, you must be alive (albeit braindead) and on life support. They take you to the Operating Room, and once they have harvested what they want, they take you off the life support and you officially die. If you simply die and then donate, your organs are not transplanted into another person, they are used for dissection. Also, there are massive incisions made from the top of your arm to the wrist and from your hip bone to the top of your foot to remove the long bones (this constitutes as "tissue" donation), and then they skin from the back, buttocks and thighs are shaved off. Again, it is a good program, but many people are not aware of the amount of mutilation done to the body and that donation of vital organs requires you to be alive.

Also, to address the issue of doctors/paramedics not saving you, that is not true, because whether or not you are a donor is the very last thing on their mind, nevermind the fact that they have no possible way of knowing who needs an organ , and whether or not you are even suitable for donation. And since you need to be alive in the first place to be a donor, why wouldn't they be doing everything in their power to save you, because, again, you can only donate vital organs if you are alive!

Lastly, there is absolutely no charge to the families of the donors or recipients for the organs, the transplant organizations foot the bill for this.

I am an organ donor for a few reasons. Once I've died, I no longer need my organs, but there are tons of people out there whose lives could be vastly improved with them, my sister had a cornea transplant, without which she would be blind today, and because I just think it is the right thing to do.

You know, just signing up to be a donor doesn't necessarily mean you will ever become one. They will only accept organs from people up to a certain age, in good health, etc, so though you may volunteer, your organs may not be selected for use. Personally, I hope to live so long they'd be useless, but if I can't have that wish come true, I'd rather help someone else's wish for a long life come true.

I would like to be an organ donor but I am not able to be. I have tattoos, history of street drug use, and I've been exposed to hep c when I had a blood transfusion years ago.
I often wonder where all of those organs REALLY go. I mean, with all of those people out there that are organ donors, and I know there must be a lot, there's gotta be people that need these organs. I never hear anything about organ recipients, do you?

I am not an organ donor anymore, I am a organ recipient. I had a heart transplant. If it were not for people willing to donate organs I would not be here to answer this question. Yes I think organ donation is a great thing. The reason I am no longer a donor is because the medicine you have to take after your transplant will not allow you to donate any organs.

Yes, I am an organ donor, I feel this is the best way I can help people when I am gone, and I would also donate while alive. It does worry me that some people steal organs, without regard to their health, most of the time they leave them to die. It amazes me how much evil is out there, they take a good thing and turn it into a evil one!

Yes, I'm an organ donor and I encourage everyone that I know to be one. My husband's aunt was in bad shape a while back, both her kidney's had failed and she was on dialysis waiting for a kidney, which we knew would be nearly impossible to find a match because of her blood type. Luckily, about 3 months ago, she was able to get a transplant. She is a single mother of two great boys and without the transplant, we didn't know just how long she would make it. So yeah, I hope everyone becomes a donor, it could be your family that needs it.

You bet I'm an organ donor. You don't do it through the MVD anymore, you have to register specifically. I highly recommend everyone do it. Every state has their own, so just type in the search "YOUR STATE donor registry". I feel very strongly on the subject because my brother's life was saved by a kidney donation.

I think organ donation is a great thing. I got a kidney from my mom! I think more people should be educated about organ donation. Also, I think that even though people put "organ donor" on their driver's license, they should make sure their family is aware of their wishes. Lots of problems occur when people aren't informed of a family member's wish to donate an organ.

Hi :)

Yes I am an organ donor and my view is that giving back to humanity is a beautiful thing to do. If I can help to save someone, a child, a parent, a sister...then it is well worth it to me. My soul will be with God in heaven -- all that will be left is the body I lived in. How awesome it would be if everyone would donate -- no more waiting lists, no more senseless dying, helping one another, even in death.
