It means youre looking at a standard design in a shop in a standard size, for example any bridal shop and youre a size 8, you like it, buy it, it needs no alteration.
Re where to buy, ANY bridal shop has a huge range of dresses so the chances are therell be something in your size. If you dont want a bridal shop experience, Debenhams and BHS both have a FANTASTIC range of dresses. (I got married in Aug and had a lot of fun looking around all these places!) HTH and enjoy the planning!

It means that you go into a bridal shop and ask to buy the exact dress you are trying on. Not for them to order a dress like it, but for you to purchase that very dress.
This can save a bundle! Make sure the dress fits okay (not perfectly; all dresses need to be altered). After alterations, the dress will always be cleaned and pressed for no charge, so don't worry if the dress looks a little beat up when you get it.
I'm not sure about the UK, but all of the dresses from David's Bridal are "off the rack," which is something they don't often advertise to their customers.

It means it is not custom made for a specific person. If it is 'off the rack' then you literally walk in a store and see it on the rack. Most celebs do not want something ordinary or something a lot of people have, so rather than buy 'off the rack' they get a couture dress made especially for them.

Off the rack means that you can wear a dress as it is, without alterations. Some people are a perfect 6, for example. A size 6 fits there body perfectly in every way.

It means wedding gowns you would literally buy off the clothes rack in a bridal shop - gowns already sewn and ready to go, usually mass-produced. The alternative is couture, or custom made, where a gown is made specifically for you. Most average people buy off the rack because of the price.

It isn't custom made for the bride. Rather than having all the fittings etc. so selects her dress from the rack then has the alterations competed if needed.

It means that you get it right off the shelf. You pick it up, try it on and that is the dress you take. You don't have to order it in your size and take another dress or anything.

It means you literally buy it "off the rack". They don't order you one.
