Paradoxically, a person who exhibits such tremendous ego and self-confidence in reality has such low self-esteem and such a fragile ego that he cannot abide any expression other than his own, for fear of annihilation of the self. Therefore everything that is not under his control is perceived as a threat.

All I mean is that I accept the possibility I'm wrong about everything whereas a religious person thinks he or she has it mostly figured out.

I don't think MIOST religious people are like this. Some are, but that is a personal problem with the ego of the person.

You should define your terms. Your definition of a "religious person" could only be one who is a slave to an idol or the leader of a cult.

On the other hand there are those who have given over the control of there lives to Almighty God. Rather than displaying a NEED for control, they have SURRENDERED control of their lives to God.

Psychoanalysis should stop when it reaches what is real and meaningful within a person. It should not try to explain away what means the most to a person. Your "question" is therefore hurtful and controlling itself. Who are you trying to help by tearing apart their faith? If a certain person was a member of a mind-control cult, that would be one thing. But you are putting all religion under the same heading.

Your own religion is pseudo-psychology.

My prayer is that you find a Faith that is constructive and will help both you and other people.

Wow,

That is generalizing.

I am a Religious Catholic, and the only time in my life that I WAS insecure was BEFORE my faith, not after.

But I don't have a tremendous ego, I am self-confidant, guilty there, but not to the level of arrogance, God seems to always humble me when I start down that path.

I don't have low self-esteem or a fragile ego though. I don't fear annihilation of the self, I just Love God.

I am not threatened by non-believers and I respect their right to not believe. I do pray for them, but the rest is their own personal decision.

Peace and God Bless you!

I think the real question here is why are religious people so secure? It's because we know our Creator, we know the truth, we know the answers to the questions because it's written in the Bible.

It doesn't hurt my ego or make me feel insecure when a lost person wishes to express him/herself. I don't feel threatened at all by the non-believers because I know the end of the story, the believers win in the end.

We feel a sense of obligation as God's word instructs us to do to turn others from their unbelief so that they might not perish and burn in hell for eternity.

Is it so terrible that Christians don't want you to die an eternal death?

Well, I can only imagine what kinda flack I'm gonna get from this answer. But your right, I don't have "self" confidence. Because left to my own devices I usually have a tendancy to screw things up. I don't say this because I think low of myself but I am telling you exactly what it is! I have found that when I put my confidence in God then things manage to go ALOT smoother. So, no I don't have self confidence...I have God Confidence!

Why does anyone become insecure?
Just because you are Christian doesn't prevent you from having normal human feelings.
I see myself as a Christian and I have low self-confidence.
Many people tell me I shouldn't be but I just am.
I think it's a good thing to be modest and not be proud of yourself.
We all have issues we need to work on.
Christians are no different than anyone else-we are just forgiven!

If they discarded the belief in deities and dogma they would experience an uplifting feeling of liberation. They're insecure because they cling to a delusion that someone else needs to save them rather than having to strive for their own salvation.

Pseudo-psychological enough for you?
Anyway, most people are insecure before becoming religious. In fact that's the reason they become religious. Either because they're going through a tough time in their life or because of the insecurity of youth. Religion doesn't make people insecure, it makes them more insecure.

I think they are just following their God, he seems a bit insecure why else would he demand such utter devotion?

Your psychoanalysis of the religious believer betrays both ignorance and vain projections.
