There are many reasons for this:
Supplement companies make all kinds of false claims as to what their products actually do.Most people are overweight for several reasons:Lack of education on the subject.Lack of physical fitness or interest in exercise. Most people have no idea what physiological factors are attributed to weight loss. They posses no knowledge of what foods should be consumed in place of others. And most people did not become overweight because of an active lifestyle.
It's much easier for most to look for an easy way out or blame fast food establishments. It is however true that some people suffer from ailments such as diabetes and hypothyroid. Those people are in the minority though. For most that's just another cop out for which they have no medical proof of the affliction.

You should take in account that most Americans are confused about portions. I mean, when you go to a restaurant they give you a huge plate full of food and a lot of people, instead of eating a normal amount, eat as much off the plate as possible. I'm not sure if they think it's just polite or what, but they seem to think they have to eat all of it.
Might have to do with most people's parents telling them to eat everything off their plates when they were younger.
Also, people aren't as active as they once were. Ever since television and the computer, most people sit in the house, not doing anything, when they aren't at work or at school. I can't lie and say I was never this way, because I was, but I started exercising and learning about portion control. It's just a matter of getting tired of being fat and not having enough energy that will make people learn how to eat and lead an active life.

There are medical conditions that affect weight. For instance, you can take in and use up as many calories as you feel like but, if you have a metabolic imbalance, it may not affect your weight at all. High metabolism also allows some to consume thousands of calories and do nothing without gaining weight. The issue of weight is far more than just what you eat and what you do. I will use me as an example since I am diabetic. Doctors tell me that as a diabetic not only is it beneficial to loose weight but it is more difficult to do so. The disease of diabetes affects the way in which the body uses the food you eat. That requires me to not only eat differently but to eat in different portions than others do. I also have to monitor my blood sugar levels which in turn helps me decide what I should eat as well. If my blood sugars are low, I have to eat more. If they are high, I should not eat much. In time it balances out (for the record I have more problems with low blood sugar than high).
Therefore, to give you a better answer than just that americans are lazy, it is an individual issue. Some people truly do have difficulty losing weight and it has nothing to do with activity levels and intake of food. These are the people who are usually sent to have stomach stapling and other radical surgeries to help them. Some people do not produce the chemical that tells them they are full as well.
I have tried many of these quack diets out there and I can tell you that they do not work for the majority of people. I am better off justing eating smaller portions and eating MORE often every day. My doctor has told me too that, for a diabetic, it is important to eat three meals a day AND to snack between meals (by snack we are talking small snacks such as fruits, little bags of chips, etc.) My dietician told me between meals and snacks i should be eating 7 times a day! Sounds weird but, when I do this, I do not eat as much during the day and I actually loose weight.
Further, i can tell you as a child I played baseball all the time and lifted weights too but still had problems with weight. I was VERY active (ask my mom) and it did nothing to help. I alsodid not eat near as much as I do now. I usually had breakfast and dinner and that was it.
So, to answer your question, so many people SAY they have problems losing weight because they REALLY do have problems losing weight. Some are immune to the "law of nature" which is not really a law. For some, the way the body deals with caloric intake does not allow a simple input vs output model to work. You should do your research before you ask such shallow and demeaning questions. Your faulty assumption (and even Dr.Phil would agree with this statement) is that every person is the same. If only it were that easy!

I believe the anwer is no, they are not immune to the laws of nature. Unfortunatly, we live in a society where people are not willing to assume personal responsibility for themselves. One commercial which advertises a certain weight-loss product informs the viewer that being overweight is not necessarily the fault of the individual. It then list five or six contributing factors which include stress, poor diet and lack of exercise. Go figure. Eat right, exercise(which,by the way, also serves as an excellent tool for stress management) and I believe chances are pretty reasonable that one who chooses to implement these things will most definately experience results favorable.

Everyone is different. Like me, i lost 20 lbs. since April and I have been stuck at this new weight for 3 months regardless of the calories in vs. the calories burned theory. I catch myself saying "I can't lose weight" all the time.

also, I think there are some medical conditions and different medications that will cause it to be very hard to lose weight...people just get disouraged.

Because losing weight is hard and its easier to place blame elsewhere. Yeah, its harder for some to lose weight than others but its never impossible as you said.

One reason maybe genetics, As your hormones are what control your eating habits in some people. A genetic mutation upsets the balance hormone vs receptors, and in some cases the receptors themselves are malformed and do not accept the right hormones.
