I teach an after school piano program for grades 1-4 in one class and grades 5-8 in two others. They need to journal at the beginning of class, we take 15 minutes. Journal topics don't always have to relate to music but I like to keep it in that area as much as possible. Ideas need to be age appropriate and comply with public school rules. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!!! I really like creative ideas, so do the students!!

1) What is their earliest memory of muisic? - - (was it the sesame street theme song or something else)
2) How do you see music helping you as you grow up?
3) What is your favorite instrument and why?
4) Do you think people who have music in their lives are happier than those who dont?

For the older kids:
What they want to do when they get out of Secondary school?
What corses do they like best?
What are their favorite hobbies?
If they could travel to any other country where would they go?
(if this is for the States) What do they want in a President?
If they could meet anyone (dead/alive/real/made-up) who/why?
For the younger kids:
What are their favorite subjects in school?
If they could go anywhere where would they go?
What is their favorite activity to do? (ie. play sports, read, play video games)

If they were sent to another planet/country/village (whatever location you choose) that had never heard of music, what would be the one most important song they would share and why?
What if the world had no music, what would they miss the most?
Everyday we are exposed to different sounds that can be considered music, what is your favorite sound?
What if sound/music was only expressed through tastes what song or sound would their favorite food come out as?

-role-playing/have them script lines of a character (like a super rich, grump, stingy, old lady from New England, or a Japanese foreign exchange student...characters with accents, or ldistinct ingos, etc)...this is just for creativity, imagination, and giggles...they MUST annuciate according to accents, trademark phrased, etc.
