I just noticed the other day he has a little black area on each of the very back top molars. He has a dentist appt. tomorrow, but I was wondering if these are permanent teeth or are the molars baby teeth as well? Thanks!

At age 5, these should still be primary teeth. But unless he's been eating a lot of raisins, it sounds like he has cavities. If so, these still need to be filled, because he's going to keep those teeth until he's about 12 or 13.
Contrary to bmac, these teeth need to remain in order to act as space maintainers for the permanent teeth. In a year or so, his 6 year molars will be coming in. This will be behind the teeth you're talking about...not in place of them.

They are all baby teeth. They start by losing the front teeth first and the molars will be the last ones to go. Don't let the dentist talk you into filling those baby teeth. I have heard of them doing that and it is such a waste. If the teeth do have cavities and they are painful to your son, better to just have them pulled and wait for the permanent ones to come in.

I'm pretty sure it is cavities, even though they are baby teeth he can still have pain if you don't get them fixed. Depending on age sometimes the dentist won't fill cuz they are about to loose them. Good Luck

it is VERY important for a child's dental health to maintain the molar teeth in the mouth untill they are replaiced by permanent.
