Hi!
It generally depends on you personal pain threshold. I've only had one tattoo (on my lower back) and although I did experience some pain, it wasn't the kind of agony I had expected.
I've heard people describe it being like red hot razors being dragged across the skin or like tiny pinpricks. The best way I can describe it is as really really intense pins and needles (like what you get in your foot if you have been sat still for too long) - uncomfortable but not unbearable. It definitely didn't put my off getting another one which I will do soon.
Apparently certain areas DO hurt more than others - anywhere with little flesh (ankles, collarbones) hurt the most, probably due to the lack of padding and the vibration of the tattooist's needle reverberating off your bones! If you have a propensity to feel faint/sickly with blood/needles and things it might be a good idea to take a friend along for moral support and have something sweet for afterwards to bring your blood sugar levels back up.
Glad to hear you have spent time on your design, very nice. Best of luck with it, I'm sure you'll do fine.

It's true!!! Some places hurt more than other spots on the body. I have a tattoo on the back of my neck (right below my hairline) and it didn't hurt me at all. But you and I are two different people. So what hurts you, I may think it tingles.
Here's a tip: The flesher (more fat or muscle) that spot where you want your tattoo. The less painful it is than a bony spot. Like the top of your back may not hurt a much as getting a tattoo on the base of your neck.
When you're getting a tattoo, a needle is going in and out of your skin at a really fast pace. So that needle would feel better going in a muscle than a bone.
Happy Tattooing

Hi,
Yes some places do hurt more than others. I've got 3 tattoos, one on the bottom of my back, one on my shoulder and the other on my foot. I'm now planning to get one on my wrist. I'd say the one which hurt the most was on my foot. The one on my lower back hurt a little bit aswell (I'd describe it as someone holding a flame next to my skin). I hardly felt the one on my shoulder and didn't hurt much at all. Like I said, it just depends where you get it. Going over bone will hurt a bit more than fleshier parts. I don't think where you're planning to get it will hurt that much. Everyone has different experiences when they have tattoo's and as it's your first you never know what to expect, it depends on the individual and their pain threshold as well.
Good Luck!

Yes, getting a tattoo hurts. How sore it is depends entirely on where you get it. But it's rarely so sore you can't get it finished. I've got a band around my upper arm. The outer side of the arm is a bit sore but the inside, where there's less muscle and more soft flesh, the tattooist had to press harder so it hurt more. My exwife has a sun and moon design around her belly button. That, according to her, was the most painful thing she's had done. Soft part of the body, lot of pressure. Other places that hurt. Anywhere where skin covers close to bone. So anything on the shin is going to nip, for example. Feet are incredibly sensitive, especially on the sole, and while getting tats anywhere else will hurt, tattooing on the feet will hurt LOTS. If you want something done on your back, it's about the best place to do it if you aren't keen on pain. It will still hurt on the soft bits, but you have fewer nerve endings on your back than any other part of your body so it hurts a bit less. And if you do get a tattoo, don't do it with a hangover. My first one, I'd been drinking until three in the morning on the night before. Six hours sleep, probably still a bit drunk, sitting in the tattooists chair getting whiter and whiter until I had to bolt for the toilet and boak. (Boak, a Scots word for throwing up) A little pain feels worse when you've got a hangover.... And don't get them anywhere you can't cover them, unless you want to end up doing a manual job. If you want something proffesional in your life (accountant, lawyer, stockbroker, that sort of thing) a tattoo is not going to be the best thing you want to show at your interview. People make judgements on the type of person who gets tattoos. Nine times out of ten that judgement is wrong, but when you're trying to get a new job those are the kind of odds you don't need.

I got a tattoo just above my hip, on the "fleshy" part. I was also worried about how much it was going to hurt. From my experience, the extremes people report of "ohmigosh, it hurts like CRAZY" to "it doesn't hurt at all" are neither accurate. Yes, it hurts a bit, but it's very barable. It felt like someone was scratching me with something sharp, like the end of a sharp pencil or a cat scratch. The first few lines are the most intense, and then your skin sensation dulls a bit and it's not bad. And I can't speak from personal experience, but I understand that some areas are more sensitive than others.
By the way, I LOVE having a tattoo and would definitely go through it again. Good luck!

I am covered in tattooes. I have sleeves and a back piece and my legs are done from the knees down. I even have one in each ear.
I can tell you that all tattoing hurts to some degree. I think that elbows, trenches, knees and spine hurts the most. The neck is next and then the achilles tendon. Shins don't hurt that much but they still hurt.
Alot of the pain depends on the artist, the actual tattoo, where you decide to put it and your tolerance for pain. The tattoo you've chosen won't hurt as bad as on that is shaded, but on your spine isn't going to be the most fun you've had.

I had a friend who got a tattoo in that same spot, and he said it hurt pretty bad at times. When I got my last tattoo it only really hurt when they did the outline because they were using a single needle, but when they shaded it in using 4 or 5 needles at a time, my skin started to numb up. It hurt mainly around thin skin where there were more nerves and wasn't as much muscle. It really boils down to what your tolerance for pain is. Personally I don't mind the pain.

Not at all, I was nervous at first which made it worse, it just irritates your skin a bit like a scratching, also i have a low pain threshold (a right wimp), but i did fine. Once the tattoos been done though try not to bump it coz it is tender afterwards like any cut is. It will be fine once its healed.
A paper cut hurts more!
As for those(guys) who said childbirth is that bad compared to having a tattoo youve not been through it so how would you know? I have and I can tell you it absolutely f***ing hurts!
As for the places the more bonier it is the more it will hurt, but if your going to have it at the top of your back youll be fine!
But once youve made your decision you better not back out coz if they start it and you run off with it half done it will kinda stupid!
Goodluck!!!!

My husnaband has 6 tattoos and he says they do not hurt at all. The initial shock of the needle is worse than when it's actually tattooing (you are more tense at this time). As a general rule, the more fleshy an area is, the less you feel it, so boney areas will tingle more than fleshy areas.
Colour tingles less than black lines as the latter are more precise so are pushed in harder.
The worst bit is the scabbing. It can itch like crazy and get really annoying. He had one done on his calf muscle and this hurt after being done as the muscle tensed thorughout the day when walking on it, then contracted at rest in the evening. This pulled on the scabs.
Other than that, it is really cool.
