Does anyone know why tvs make a cracking sound while they are on or off???

Its the sound of the high voltage charging up and off from the flyback to the tube

Don't worry, your TV is OK....That's the natural sound on a larger tube size.

The crackle you hear is the High Voltage charging up the air around the picture tube.....any further explanation would require some serious time and thought.

As long as you mean 'cracking' sound and not 'crackling' sound, it's nothing more than the TV set's casing expanding and/or contracting with temperature changes.
