I have a 20 lb 1 yr old Boston Terrier, we are going on our first plane trip together next week. I was thinking about getting a qualude for him, but a friend suggested two tblspns of beer. Is this a good idea? What would you recommend?

Benadryl is great for this instead of tranquilizers. this is what i give mine on the fourth of july because of fireworks suggested by my veteranarian.
for a 20 pound dog, give 1 25 mg pill. it can make the dog sleepy and sometimes it just makes them very mellow, and benadryl is safe and effective for this and allergies in dogs.

a couple of tblspns of beer isn't going to last long and won't do much for you terrier. Dogs are very sensitive to alcohol and their livers have a hard time processing it. Beer would probably make the situation worse, because when the dog comes too after a short buzz, he will have to struggle with processing the sugar and it is also a dehydrator.

I would go with something from the vet. Get expert advice from you vet and what is best for you dog. A good vet will always try to get away with giving the dog nothing. It is taxing on an animal to be sedated. However, a vet will know that Boston terriers have a tendency to get excited easily. Go with a vet that knows you and your dog very well.

Good Luck and Take Care

call your vet on this one. dong give it a qualude, are you nuts?! you could KILL you pet easily with that. as for beer, dumb idea. wont work. and you can do damage to it as well. if anything, half a dramomine. but i would call you vet. they might say benadryl. they can tell you exactly how much and when of what to give him depending on size and how long you want it sedated

While a lot of dogs like beer, that doesn't guarantee it's going to put him out. I recently flew with my cat, and the vet was able to give me a tablet to mellow him out. It worked really well and was inexpensive. I'd go that route, rather than the beer.

I agree - getting him checked for a accessible UTI could desire to be finished before you attempt correcting this subject. He ought to not have the potential to assist what he's doing whether frankly UTIs often look by using continual peeing, usually with not lots popping out. carry jointly a pattern of his urine (you may ought to bypass carry jointly a pattern bottle from them first) as this could shop time on the vets, and stay away from according to probability the ought to catheterise him there. and you vet would be properly inspired!! They the two do the urinalysis themselves, or deliver it off to be examined. it is so effortless as that. consistent with what the outcomes are, he will the two in basic terms be positioned on antibiotics to clean it up, or, if crystals are cutting-edge in his urine, they could test his bladder to ascertain no rely if there are extremely bladder stones there. yet do not postpone - it desires diagnosing. If he's clean, that's behaviour and you will ought to get him out immediately after he's fed, before he has the possibility to bypass to his room and pee. If he would not do something exterior (bypass with him!!) carry him back in, blockading the room, and stay with him till he tries to pee - and then say No! and get him back exterior. this is going to take some paintings, yet he could desire to get the message. I actual doubt he's all of sudden marking, after being in the hot homestead for a 365 days - if this became by way of fact of left-over smells, genuinely he'd have started doing this immediately once you moved there!?

I would not suggest beer. I would go the the local pet store. They have products that put dogs at ease and help control anxiety. Synergy Labs and Nutri-Vet are some great mfgs. of supplements for this case.

You can buy it online or locate your local pet store that carries one of the products. I hope this helps!

When we are driving long distances in the car I give my dogs dremamine. Its a motion sickness pill and it makes them very sleepy, but make sure you give it to him about an hour before you leave because it takes that long to start working. Your dog is small, I would only give him 1/2 a pill, you don't want to knock him out, you want him to be comfortable.

Please talk to your vet before giving the dog beer. You obviously care very much for your dog - you are taking him with you & you want him comfortable. Make the effort & call the vet. You won't have to worry about second guessing how to treat the dog.

Please talk to your veterinarian BEFORE you give your dog ANYTHING. He/She could probably prescribe a mild sedative. I think the beer is probably not the way to go either. That would most likely just make your dog sick. Just call your vet first, PLEASE!!!
