I am not capable of purchasing a flight right now, but I am worried that I would not be able to afford them if airfare increases much over the next month before thanksgiving. Right now the tickets I am finding are around $500. If they go up much, I will not be able to travel. I noticed that the price of oil is going down though!

Airfare always goes up near the holidays. If you have the flexibility, try to travel on the least popular days. Leave on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and come back on a Tuesday or Wednesday. You'll find the flights are cheaper.

Unfortunately they will probably only go up in price. The price of oil is going down and hopefully air travel will get cheaper in general, but the demand for holiday travel is always going to be high no matter what other factors there are. As others have said, the more flexible you are with your travel dates, the more likely you are to get a cheaper flight.

Flights will only go up between now and Thanksgiving, IF you can get them at all. The only real option you have is to go to Priceline and fly ON Thanksgiving Day. That would be your best bet.

I am pretty sure airfare goes up the closer you get to the holidays.
