I'm thinking he was 8 or 9, and was going through a real knights/castles phase. We had little money, so couldn't have kids out somewhere (always liked home parties better, anyway).
As each child came, I blared a toy trumpet, and "announced" the new arrival as "Sir____ " or "Lady____". I presented them with their "banner" (made of construction paper and decorated by my son), which we strung up on a line in the living room. (There were probably 7 or 8 kids). One game we played was called "Lady of the Lake" like from Merlin's legend - they loved that, learning the story of Excaliber. My son's birthday is late October, so it was unfortunately already quite cold, but got them bundled up and we went in the backyard for "Jousting" - with bananas! Put garbage bags on over their coats, and they all had a blast.
What's really funny is that kids still talk about this - and they are 14 and 15 years old now!

This party can be adapted for any holiday, my daughter happened to be born in October, thus the Halloween theme.

Make sure the invitation says to wear 'old' clothes (they might get messy).

Make a menu (be creative with wording/decorations)

__1___ 1) maggots (rice)
___3__ 2) slime (green jello)
__2___ 3) dagger (knife)
__1___ 4) ghost (napkin)
____2_ 5) witches brew (punch)
_3____ 6) tombstone (garlic toast)
_____ 7) Pitchfork (fork)
_____ 8) Shovel (spoon)
_____ 9) Intestines (spaghetti)
_____ 10) Graveyard Grass (salad)
_____ 11) Eyeballs (grapes)
_____ 12) Don't remember, sorry

Anyway have them number their 'menu' with three items for the four courses.

ONLY those three items will be served at that course.

Then ALL will be taken away. Including the utensils!! If they order the spoon, knife & spoon are all ordered at one time, that is it -- they eat the rest with their hands!! They cannot leave the table till dinner is done. AND they do not get the next course until everyone is done with that course.

It was sooooooo much fun. The kids did not mind that they had spaghetti sauce on their fingers, they just licked it off. That party is still remembered as one of her favorites.

We even did this with adults one time, just changed the food/names and they too just laughed. Great time!!

In my opinion the best parties are ones where the kids can just have fun, find a place where they can run and be kids, themes and timetables/schedules can be aggravating for kids and a ton of work for you. Cake ice cream gifts and friends...who needs more? In my opinion all the big to-do is usually for the adults-keeping up with the party next door kind of thing...Ask the child what they are really interested in. If you want to do something big-pick one thing a moon bounce, or a pony or a clown...not all 3 keeps the costs down AND doesn't over stimulate an already sugar-high group of kids!!!

We rented out a rolllerskating rink last month for my son's 9th birthday..... not just a few tables, but the whole place was ours for two whole hours... complete with video/arcade games, karaoke and a DJ!

It was actually much cheaper than paying for the number of people he wanted to invite and we got to invite many more people (including parents and siblings) because we had the whole place to ourselves. The cost was roughly the same as renting a moonwalk for a day.

We invited his whole class, his entire soccer team, family, friends and neighbors... it was so much fun!

It was a huge hit and I'd definately do it again if he wanted another party like that.

We just had a birthday slumber party for my 11 year old daughter and the girls had a blast! Most fun of the evening was a fashion show. I had gone to garage and rummage sales and bought tons of used clothes and accenssories and the girls used them to make their own unique outfits - they were allowed to cut whatever they wanted, and we had fabric glue and safety pins for them to put them back together. They each made 3 outfits, which they were judged on and we had a winner. They each then put on their favorite outfit and we took them to the mall for dinner - they LOVED walking around the mall in their "new outfits"!

My niece wanted a spiderman party. My brother rented a spiderman costume and had one of his friends dress up as spiderman. Spiderman showed up and crashed the party. He shot silly string webs all over and gave out spidey party favors. Unfortunately, my niece was afraid of him and wouldn't talk to the spiderman. But, she talked about it for months afterwards. My brother said that she would tell strangers in the store that spiderman was at her birthday party.
