If he handles any special requests for special seating, liquor handling or food issues, Yes. If he just walks you to the first available table, I don't tip him.

Besides the above answers... it also depends on the type of restaurant. For casual or low-cost restaurants it is not expected to tip the Maitre D.

I would do it only under the most extreme of circumstances.

Examples would be...

If they get you seated at a great table, or if you didn't have reservations during a busy time...

If they helped you to celebrate a special occasion...

If they did you some kind of other special favor...

Also, if you come to the restaurant often and want to say ''thank you''.
