when he first falls asleep put his little feet in ice cold water.
Cruel??? perhaps. But it will keep him awake a little bit longer each day until you get his internatl clock set right.

And payback is a bytch for being up all hours of the night. lol

I assume you mean overnight and not for a nap.

I suggest you decide what the sleep time should be (e.g. 8:00 PM until 6:00 AM), and don't get your kid out of the crib during that time, not for any reason (well, if he's sick or something, but under normal circumstances just leave him in there).

If he cries, you still need to leave him in there. Maybe go into his room to let him know you're in the house, but don't pick him up. Not even for a sec. Sounds cruel, perhaps, but it works. And really, it isn't mean, as a parent you need to teach your child all manner of things, including how to sleep through the night.

Most parents find that after only a few nights, maybe a week, he'll be sleeping through the night.

Do you mean at night?? I hope so, because a 2 year old taking a 3 hour nap?? That's crazy. lol

Anywho, to answer your question.. kids do not sleep through a night. No child does. What makes the difference between parents who THINK their child sleeps all night, and the parent who KNOWS their child doesn't is how the child feels when they wake up.

All children awake from sleep approximately every 2-3 hours at night. If they are self soothing, they will go back to sleep. If you child is not normally one who can handle stresses, bumps and bruises, and not getting his way well.. then he will be the one that won't go back to sleep and will get out of his bed, or cry for someone to come and soothe him back to sleep.

Teach him that he's not going to get attention when he wakes up at night.. because that's all he wants. When he wakes up and wants you, put him back in his bed and cover him up without saying a word. Don't linger in the room, don't look back.. don't give him any attention at all other than what you had to in order to put him back in his bed.

Eventually he'll learn that he's not getting what he wants anymore at night, and crying and coming to get you is going to be pointless. He'll be able to soothe himself to sleep, and you'll be able to sleep too.

Has he ever slept for longer? Has it always been a problem and when he wakes do you always go to him straight away? some children do this for attention from their parents. It will take time but with perserverance and consistatly putting him back to bed with no talking and minimal fuss he will soon get the message that night time is for sleeping, but you must be consistant and be prepared for hard work. As long as there is no medical reason for his waking then he should get the message in the end.

Don't let them take a nap during the day and they should sleep better at night. Also routine plays an important role. Make sure bedtime is the same every night.

Possibly having more activities during the day to keep them busy..wear her/him out. No naps..& a later bedtime. You dont say anything about any other problems but if there is could he/she be hyperactive?
