Sky exists solely to make money. They can buy repeats far more cheaply than making original programmes.
They leave originality to BBC and ITV.
Then they charge you for being advertised to.
They also rub salt in the wound by charging on pay to view for films and sporting events. The terrestial broadcasters are losing viewers as a result of Sky's activities which casts doubt on their futures.
I dread the day when all you could be offered is subscription TV.

The basic subscription to Sky TV costs more per year than the TV licence and yet BBC shows are repeated on Sky TV and particularly UKTV stations. In effect you are paying for these programmes twice and the channel operators are making money on the adverts too! Digital channels that people want to watch are on top-up TV for which you pay and still you get adverts. When the IBA controlled television commercials strict rules were enforced about advertising policy but now they seem to be able to have them every ten minutes.
The way forward from a public point of view is to refuse to pay subscriptions for any channels. In six months the subscriptors would have to offer all channels for free but with adverts, or for payment with no adverts, (like Sky movies does now) or go bust.
But nobody wants to be without their favourite telly for months so I can't see it happening, can you?

Yeah I know its a right con, a family member decided to get rid of it as it was full of old repeats and bloomin adverts, you'd think they would put on more quality british programmes but they don't, that are brand new and exclusive to the channel but most of their so called new series are of American shows, which many end up on terrestrial television in the end anyway. Its a waste of money especially seeing as youv'e gotta to pay even more money for the film premiere channels, better off staying with freeview and buying the lastest series of your favourite programme online if you aren't patient enough to wait for them to go on any British television channel. I watched the latest series of Nip/Tuck by buying it from Ebay from America by the time i'd finished watching it, it was only a few episodes into the new series on Sky, I was ahead of Sky and wasn't prepared to buy Sky just to see this one series, fortunately most of the programmes I like go on terrestrial television so I wait, don't know how alot of people manage paying for Sky television as so many bills such as gas and electric, are increasing.

It is very annoying when they synchronise their advert breaks on all channels - makes me curse! What's more for a fat fee you can now 'record' programmes using sky plus so that everything you watch is a repeat! Mind you, you do actually get to fast forward through al the ads!

I have cancelled my subscription to sky and gone freesat because of this. I think it is a rip off if every body stopped subscribing to sky I think they would soon get the message .
Have you seen the price to watch live football more adverts and a high price .
Sorry for going on ???
Cheers P&T

Tv set is produced to the lowest common denominator - i.e., the average IQ of the general public, whereas a written book is written to the best common denominator

I very strongly agree Mistress--For the money one pays most of it apart from Performance and Arts, can be drivel, with the commercials maddening.

It is annoying but it all helps their profit margin. If they kept buying new programmes then they wouldn't make much profit.
Try watching http://www.youtube.com - far more interesting abd varied than tv.
