For adult females - Multiply body weight by 10; add the body weight to this value.
[i.e., for a 120 lb female, 1,200 + 120=1,320 cal/day BMR]

My wife has always quoted a MINIMAL SUBSISTENCE caloric intake as 1200 calories a day. That is if you are sedentary, don't sweat, and live in a climate-controlled environment.

For those of us who walk around at work/school, sweat, have to keep warm, have to do high-order analytical thinking, etc, the better number to use is 2000 calories a day.

If you are an athlete, have a strenuous and labor intensive job, etc, then your caloric intake should be somewhere close to 3000 calories a day.

You need to reduce I think. As a rule a person doing hard work needs 30 cal/kilo, moderate activity 20 cal/kilo, reducing 10-15 cal/kilo. This should not fall below a 1000 cal.

I Don't count calories. I Eat a balance diet. i.e. cooked as well as raw stuff like salads and fruits. Most importantly I don't overeat even if the food is very tasty. Concentrate on what you are eating (i.e. don't sit in front of a TV and eat) and eat slowly. It takes time for your stomach to tell your brain that you are full. So rushing while eating makes you overeat and that is mainly the problem.
