A psychotherapist interacts with patients to initiate change in the patient's thoughts, feelings, and behavior through adaptation. Psychotherapists provide treatment in individual and group settings. A licensed psychotherapist obtains a master's degree or doctorate in a chosen mental health field, undergoes a supervised clinical residency, and is licensed, certified, or registered by a government or psychological agency to which they are accountable. Licensed professionals who practice psychotherapy include the following:
Psychiatrists
Registered psychiatric nurses
Clinical social workers
Marriage therapists
Family therapists
Clinical psychologists

There are many different types of psychotherapy, some therapists specialize in a certain type while others are more generalists. Some are in private practice, others work for hospitals/care facilities, and even others are part of the social services system.
I believe that all certified ones require a masters at least and must also undergo some therapy themselves - which is absolutely necessary from my perspective since it gives them a better idea what their clients experience. Try searching some university website catalogs that offer psychology masters degrees. The descriptions for upper level counseling classes should give you an idea on which focuses are out there. You can then read up some more on the various therapies and professions. It can be a tough field for anyone who doesn't have their own act together, and it's also one that carries a lot of responsibility. Good luck.

But before you can decide if a therapist has the right stuff, you need to find one. How do you begin? "Psychotherapist" is a title almost anyone can claim, since its use isn't well regulated in many states. So if that title is the only information you have about a potential therapist, proceed with caution
