My 18 year old future nasa employee decided that her socks were not warm enough so she threw them in the microwave. The socks had metal on them and needless to say caught on fire. The fire shot out the back and bottom of the microwave. My 16 year old decided to put something in the microwave about half an hour later for like 30 seconds or so. His stuff heated up but I am worried that I might have a radiation leak from the bonfire. Additionally the smell is awful. I would prefer to buy a new microwave but this was an expensive microwave and an equal replacement would not be cheap. Any suggestions on if it is safe?

Your daughter is 18 and should realize that actions have consequences. Microwaves were not designed to heat socks and she damaged your microwave. Let your daughter buy a new one. If flames shot out the bottom there is the possibility that wiring or insulation was damaged. I would not risk having a fire in my house and replace the microwave.

there is no radiation leak because there is no radioactive material in ANY microwave. do you honestly think the government would allow people to possess radioactive material in their homes in reach of nitwits such as your children? a microwave works by converting the electricity it receives when you plug it in into radio Microwaves, these microwaves penetrate your food or whatever you put into the oven at a molecular level and cause the molecules to vibrate agaisnt each other causing friction, this friction is what heats the food. again, there is no radiation what so ever in any microwave. if your microwave caught fire it is likely it burned up alot of the wiring and such and can be an electrical fire hazard if used again. trash it and make your kid buy a new one. do yourself a favor and look up "how a microwave works" on the internet.

yes - it is still safe, however, i would first boil a large bowl half full with a water/vineger mix in the microwave to extract any smell that would have been left behind. Also - tell your daughter to try throwing them in the dryer or ironing them in the future if cold socks are that big of an issue. (dryers work better because she can warm up her entire outfit at once while removing wrinkles at the same time)

LMAO that is a great story! I would get a new microwave to be safe, it may have broken some of the seals and radiation could leak out.

Your Microwave is toast.. She should have thrown them in the dryer. Make her pay for the new microwave.
