It depends on the recipe - read the recipe completely through first... if it asks you to cook the cups of pasta and set aside - then it is asking for a dry pasta measurement. If it asks you to cook pasta and then it says add 3 cups of pasta then they want it cooked - typically though all measurements are dry unless stated otherwise. (for example: three cups of cooked pasta, drained - in this case they want it cooked before measuring)

typically a recipe calls for un-cooked / un-blended / etc. items unless otherwise stated. HOWEVER, if the recipe is from your average person, they do not have someone writing the recipe while they prepare it (like a chef does.) They use their memory and that may be faulty. Since pasta is in-expensive, make the three cups dry and if it looks like way too much for the balance of the ingredients, set aside half and remember to change the recipe yourself for the next time you make it

Definitely after cooking. Do hope your pasta salad turns out well.

i believe it is before the pasta is cooked. If you try to measure that pasta after it cooks it will be bigger than three cups because the pasta would have absored some water.

3 cups after it is cooked. Unless, it's a huge salad. I believe that 3 cups uncooked would end up being 6 cups after it is cooked.

Look for the number of people it serves,3 cups cooked will be at least double and maybe triple cooked, this would serve a lot of people, plus take a lot of other ingredients to finish off.More than likely for an average meal, it is after it is cooked.

Usually cooked. For instance, if the recipe calls for you to add cooked pasta to other ingredients.

I would assume it means cooked pasta. You don`t have to be precise in cooking. Use a recipe as a guideline then make things to your own taste.

That would be 3 cups of "dry" pasta.
