My husand was deployed and was in Samarra. That is 45 miles north of Bagdad. It wasn't pretty over there. What they do is try to survive. Also he had a friend in Kuwait, he bagged bodies of the deceased soldiers, American and Iraqi. They both still have bad nightmares, I can't imagine and don't even want to.
God bless them all for being so heroic and courageous.

There are US military personnel in over 140 countries worldwide.
In many of these countries they are at US Embassies as Embassy Guards (Marine Corps).

Elsewhere it depends on what their individual jobs are. Admin Clerks do office work, Infantry trains for combat, as does Artillery.
Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors are constantly training to be the best at their respective jobs they can be.
