Its called Metabolism...If you have a high metabolism you can burn fat/calories faster than if you have a lower one. So people with a high metabolism can eat and eat and not gain a pound. While people with a low one can hardly eat and gain lots of weight. When you are younger you will have a high metabolism, but it decreases as you age.

I eat a healthyish diet (fish, white meat, wholegrain foods etc), exercise everyday (ride to the train station on a bicycle, steps, use stairs rather than lifts etc...) yet I never lose weight. I have an underactive thyroid (on tablets for this) and other health problems. I have never been able to lose weight but if I so much as look at a cake I put on weight. Doctor can't tell me why this is. :(
So to all the people out there that judge over weight people just remember some of us have no choice over the matter.

It could be that she has a thyroid disorder, it could be slow metabolism, it could be that she doesn't get enough exercise for a person her age. It could be a number of things, but I would think that those are the most common. But in any case if her eating habits are not matching her weight gain then she should be taken to a doctor so that if there is a problem it can be dealt with or treated before any serious damage is done to her body.

I bet your cousin pigs loads of junk food when her mum is not around. Its a very simple equation....more food than the body needs = rise in body weight. Very few people get fat on not eating! There are some health conditions that predispose people towards gaining weight but they are not as common as some people believe. Diets dont work for your friends because they dont stick to them, and eating very little is not the way to lose weight, not if you want to keep it off. By eating very little the body goes into starvation mode (even if you are very overweight). The speed the body works at slows down and it gets harder to lose weight.
Skinny people generally have a higher body speed that burns off the extra calories they eat.

Gene pool? usually has something to do about it. Metabolism is charged by eating more, and slows when eating less. Then there is the combination of foods that work for or against weight gain or loss. Figity skinny little people, always moving, seem to be able to eat anything. Got to MOVE to burn, even if it is just figiting! Ya, I know people like this too.

There are many factors that determine a persons weight. Everyone's rate of metabolism is different - there could also be genetic, hormonal and glandular influences. I, for one, never look down my nose at overweight people. I know many who eat far less than I do and I am of normal weight.

Under/over active thyroid?
Polycystic ovaries syndrome?
There's lot of things out there that can affect weight, other than how much we eat. Depends if there are other side affects. If not, probably just down to faster or slower metabolism.

the best diets get you to eat loads
its not how much you eat its what you eat
and exercise
the answer to the first bit is that some people just have a higher metabolism than others and are there to be jealous of
that's their role in life
