Give a specific example of a behavior that you feel society shuns that will get you referred to a doctor rather than a police station. Do these "socially unacceptable behaviors" also happen to be illegal ones cos if not that's probably your problem right there.

Mental illness is a broad generic label for a category of illnesses that may include affective or emotional instability, behavioral deregulation, and/or cognitive dysfunction or impairment.

Since mental illness is frequently a physical illness manifesting through and exacerbated by behavior, most people with mental illness also benefit from psychotherapy, either from a psychiatrist or some other qualified clinician, like a social worker or psychologist. The most basic treatment involves identifying maladaptive, self-destructive, or inappropriate behaviors and finding ways, with the patient, of coping with, eliminating, or altering those behaviors to promote overall mental health.

Therefore often people are referred to a Psychiatrist rather than to the police. Most police departments are not able to handle the complexity of mental illness. Being mentally ill is not a crime and therefore should not be punished

Some people with mental illness are not in control of thier behaviors. A therapist and psychiatrist can help that person learn to control thier behaviors with medication and therapy. Some behaviors are just socially unacceptable, not illegal.

The behaviors that lead to committment for evaluation by a psychiatrist are not socially unacceptable ones but rather behaviors that demonstrate that the person is a clear and present danger to themselves or others. One can be as odd as possible, dig in trash cans, talk to oneself, but if one is not considered a danger, there is no basis for committment. People are completely free to be odd.

It isn't that it doesn't make sense, it is your question is awkward but I get what it is you are asking....

I don't think anyone wants to see a mentally ill person arrested and/or sent to when if they just had a doctor, therapy and maybe some medication, they would stop behaving socially unacceptable.

Because...deviant behavior is best approached by understanding the person and helping him overcome his personal problems, where police will generally deal with them impersonally....and that doesn't really solve anything except the victim's complaint.

When he gets out of prison, he's likely to do it again. Shrinks help make people realize what they want out of life and gives the deviant to make conscious efforts to improve himself.
