a guy friend and i were chatting when i came in to work. everything was cool with us when we were joking around. but then i asked him how we was doing and he got quiet, and kinda nodded his head and said "fine". ???

I'd say you should ask him. Obviously he's not fine. Maybe he will sahre and maybe he won't, but it's worth a shot. See if he wants to get a drink after work sometime.

Could be a number of things on the lads mind. Just go with the flow. If he wants to talk about it with you then you should be all ears. If he doesnt then let it go until he's ready to talk to someone..

There's probably something he wants to tell you but can't. Can you email him privately? Maybe saying something like,
Hey, you looked upset. are you ok?
If you think he's mad at you then say that too...
Hey, you looked upset, did I upset you? Hope not. Me.
Something short and to the point.
Maybe he just doens't want to talk about it.
