Focal point of Gen. Burnside's wasteful attacks at the Battle of Fredricksburg, VA. Burnside sent wave after wave of Union Soldiers uphill into the face of a determined enemy in a heavily fortified position -- in a road behind a chest-high stone wall, supported by artillery. The carnage was astounding -- 7000 Union casualties at Marye's Heights alone.

The actual site was about 600 yards to thw west of the town proper (at the time of the battle).
